What elementary school on The Hill?

As was pointed out in another thread, MV added two new classes this year so they've opened up a TON of PK3 and PK4 slots this year. As such it is the only WL really moving and so it is drawing a lot of attention and noise. Don't be fooled, it is like the rest of DCUM; BS without cause, logic or merit.

I'm the parent of a rising First Grader from Peabody who will be going to Watkins. I currently only know of two kids (from a total of four classes) in the entire school NOT going to Watkins. I'm sure there are more than a handful, but, honestly, I just don't know of more than two, and I've been asking....(and I presently haven't heard of anybody going to MV, though maybe my kid's in another circle.)

As for SES status, if it's any indicator, I've been to A LOT of birthdays that cost over $500. And The school's starting to look like a mini-Boden catalog.

There's also a visible demographic shift between my K child's class and my Pk3 child's. (The PK3 class is diverse, but my impression--based on no hard-data, but impressions from fellow parents--is that it's more uniformlyl higher SES.)

I will be very interested to see if a critical mass of your kid's Peabody class stays through 2nd or 3rd grade. It would be great if that happened, but I have my doubts. Come lottery time next year, my guess is there won't be a single middle/high SES family that doesn't put in some picks for a different school/better MS option.

Jeez. Could you at least try to hide your anger and bitterness? I don't have a horse in the Peabody race but it is just so intriguing to see the Cluster drama and people's unwillingness to let it go.

Not sure where you are getting bitterness. I'm a (high SES) parent of a 3 year old IB for Peabody/Watkins who desperately doesn't want to leave the Hill or pay for private school. So... more like anxiety.

Lots of people play the lottery. I did--and my rising first grader had good options.

But the Watkins renovation will help retain and draw people.

Watkins/Peabody is also getting a new Principal--honestly, whether it's somebody good will really matter.

My plan/goal is to send my current PK3er/rising PK4 in another 2.5 years.

But you can check back with me next year on how that plan is going!

There are always parents even in the "best" DCPS schools playing the lottery. However, Peabody's current K class has something like 80 kids in it. Something tells me there are not enough OOB slots in "good" DCPS schools to accommodate this number of kids. If people don't want to move or go private, they might just have to go to Watkins if lottery luck doesn't strike. Get enough of a critical mass of parents who are stuck, and Watkins will be forced to turn in spite of itself. Of course, one hopes that some of these parents will also want to make Watkins work themselves. Seeing how active the Cluster PTA is, those parents are already there.

If everyone who went to K at Peabody continued on to Watkins, would they take OOB kids still? (In other words, is Watkins grade 1 bigger than Peabody K)?

+1. I'm guessing a lot.

I wonder how many are going to leave Brent or Maury for MV? MV has a middle school and a feeder HS. Brent and Maury feed into nothingness as early as 6th.

Enrollment at Brent is increasing, not decreasing. No one with kids at Brent is talking about MV except perhaps as a backup for a younger sib who may not get into PK.

for all the rancor about Watkins on this site, the renovation plans are impressive and even the immediate surrounding blocks are undergoing significant positive development changes (depending on your perspective). Watkins also has some phenomenal built-in fundraising mechanisms like the Cap Hill Classic and the Renovators House Tour which bring a lot of funds without requiring big checks from parents. There are also just enough at risk students to help with the per pupil funding model. Watkins isn't there yet, but in 2-3 years it will likely be another story.

We didn't either. Why hassle with the commute when we have good options right here in our neighborhood.

X1000. Rising K family in-bounds for LT and we haven't played the lottery since PS3. Feeling lucky to have a nice neighborhood school with a solid middle school feed (SH).
OP, you should definitely tour LT and speak to more families on the MOTH listserv about the school. It's a wonderful community.

Agreed. I have no interest in MV as an alternative to my great IB Hill school. Not to mention the fact that I don't want an immersion model! Not everyone has drunk the Koolaid on that.

Your certainty is both amusing and alarming.
