Very, very few are actually paying 65K.

If you mean of all college students that's probably true. If you mean at colleges that charge $65k/year that's not true. At most private colleges about 35-40% are full pay. That's not insignificant. At my DCs OOS state flagship many of the OOS students (which is more than 40% of the overall student body) are full pay at close to $55k/year.

They are paying for prestige.

If you are willing to go to a school that is a step down from the top-ranked school that you can get into, you can often save a lot of money. If you can get into NYU, but they want near full-sticker, you could probably attend one of the better SUNYs for almost nothing. They may not have quite the name recognition, but the top SUNYs are good schools.

Is Carlton different from Carleton? -- because the latter is one of the most selective colleges in the country.

Tufts has come up considerably in the last 10 years. Not Ivy, but it tries hard.

At my son's private SLAC, nobody is at full pay. 100% have merit aid at some level and many have FA on top of that.

Acceptance rate is not a complete guage of selectivity.

I heard that it's free with a certain SAT or ACT score.

Bama has been making a huge push to recruit out-of-state students.

Tufts 'ranks' 27 on the US News. Not that's the primary reason DC is looking at Tufts. Its academics are impressive and has been added for fall applications.
