My 51 pound three-year-old girl is not overweight, just BIG

Me, too--or at least when I started third grade. I was always short and skinny as a kid, but nothing really extreme, just one of the smaller kids in my class. I would be very concerned if my 3-year-old weighed 51 lb., even if she were unusually tall. Are one or both parents very big people?

This. OP use the calculator on webmd and read the results. They aren't great and explain your doctors concern. http://www.webmd.com/parenting/raising-fit-kids/weight/bmi/bmi-calculator

I just plugged my DS info on this calculator and he's considered obese on it. He's extremely tall and lean - you can see his ribs and hip bones poking out. He towers above kids several years older than he is. I brothers who are over 6'8" and they are extremely skinny.

These BMI calculators are obviously missing something!!

Or maybe you typed in the numbers wrong.

Nope. Definitely didn't type in the numbers wrong. BMI is a very flawed system of measurement.

Agree, my BMI actually increased after I lost 40 lbs. I don't trust it at all.

That's impossible. You did something wrong.

Naw. its still a little chunky. Yours too.

My pediatrician used to ask my Mom if she fed me concrete, lol. I was a very tall, skinny child who, like my Dad, weighed quite a lot.

Now, you might want to make sure your child doesn't have hormonal problems but, if she takes after you or your husband, maybe wait and see.

95% for weight is almost always overweight. 95%ile for height is just tall. My three kids in the 90+%ile for height all have different body types, different skeletons, builds, etc. None of them have ever been over 75%ILE for weight after a year and you would never think they were too thin.

That's not true at all. my kids are 99% for height and one of them is in the 75% for weight, the other is 95%. Neither is fat, They are just super tall. Their pediatrician agrees. They, however, are not anywhere near as heavy as OP's kid.

And, BMI sucks for those of us who are just heavy. I was so skinny as a child you could see my ribs, but always weighed more than I should. My husband is also stocky, but now won't even listen to what doctors say about his weight--because they always freaked out about BMI when he had very little fat on him when younger.

At my son's 4 yo well visit, he was the same height (42 inches) and weighed 40 lbs.

I said almost always. Not always. It's still true. One of my kids is over 100% for height, pure muscle, big bones, and still well under 90% for weight. OP's child doesn't sound merely chunky, let alone slim.

My 48" kid is not 50 lbs yet. I think your kid might be fat. Sorry.

My twin boys who are almost 9 just passed the 50 lb mark within the last few months.

My seven yr old is 50" and 48 lbs and he looks normal Not fat or skinny.

If your DD is 42" tall and weigh 51 lbs, she's fat.

LOL.

Seriously, I always wondered how the parents of the children on Biggest Loser allowed themselves to be that much in denial. Now, I get it.

When I brought home the statement from the doctor that my children were technically obese, everyone did a double take. They are both quite tall for their ages and universally mistaken for being older. They don't look at all chubby or even plump. The ratio is appropriate.

Still.

I re-visited our diet and removed some snacks. I also added more opportunities for exercise. Nothing major.

Why not take in the feedback from your doctor? It prompted me to improve the good habits that were already in place and remove a couple of things from my grocery list that didn't fully contribute to healthy energy and high-power nutrition.

We all have room to improve.

Had a very similar experience with one of my kids and had a very similar reaction.
