how old does your daughter have to be to wear a bikini?

DD has always been tall and slim so started with Gap tankinis when she was four. It became hard to find tankinis as she got older. She was about 9 when she went to a bikini. At 14-15, almost all the girls at the pool wear them.

Count me as one of those who sees way too many bikinis that aren't cute, but instead seem to be a little flirty or provocative. DD can wear a rashguard and bottoms or a tankini where maybe only a little bit of her tummy shows. Otherwise, 1-piece all the way.

I asked DH if a bikini was ok for a 1st grader.
My husband said:

"No. I would never want to do anything that would encourage the worst in some people that are out there. It is more about that, that anything else."

Not until she can consistently and effectively apply sunblock to all of her very fair skin that is not covered by her bikini. Until then, rash guard.

Oh well, if "all" the girls are wearing them, I will make sure my daughter does too.

Be sure to cloak her in to-the-ankles muu-muus and cover her face, too.

Girls need to be LEFT ALONE. Go after the jerks instead. Don't punish the girls for what someone might do or think.

Please explain to your husband that this puts the blame for wrong-doing on first-graders in bikinis, where it does not belong, instead of on people who want to do bad things, where it does.

Please also explain to your husband that there is no relationship between a first-grader's swimsuit and a child molester's choice of victim.

Thanks.

This is actually a very creepy thing to say. Wtf?

This could be the most rational post in this otherwise ridiculous thread. My DD wore bikinis as an infant, when I was the one who slathered her with sunblock. I've never had an issue with a bikini on her, I don't have those weird hang ups. But when she became too impatient and wiggly, rash guards all the way. She prefers it, hates sunblock under her arms or on her chest.

Your husband is a weirdo!

my DDs are 5 and 9 and wear only the lower piece of a bikini (or a one piece swim suit). they will wear a bikini (with the top) when they start having boobs, which I do not think it is going to be before age 12 or 13 I guess. a bikini on a 4 year old looks very weird to me, since there is really nothing to cover

Then why cover the stomach? I don't understand this logic

I agree. So count me as one of the weirdos. They have the rest of their adult lives to wear one if they choose, why start now?
