If you make $100K and donate $1K, you'll be far ahead of what many other people in this thread have done (including me). So have at it. There are organizations that will be happy to have it.

Church donations do not count because that is like a membership fee. It doesn't help anybody but yourself. Should not even be deductible.

Same for Little League, Scouts, soccer league, PTA, Band Boosters, ............. There is a whole "class" of tax deductible donations that go to organizations that benefit the donor.
