Well paid government employees who can't afford a one or two week shutdown

Anonymous
Too many Americans choose to live above their means. If one or two weeks is going to kill you, then yes you need to reevaluate your spending.

Oh, I certainly have an emergency fund and it isn't going to "kill me." But I don't like that my child is going to have to make due with less because of this ridiculous BS.

Would you rather be like many private sector employees and unemployed. Federal employees are very lucky. Yes I'll be sad to lose some money, but I know way to many folks in the private sector who've been hit very hard in this economy not to thank my lucky stars for my fed job.

Your friends have no budgeting skills.

Ok, so the choices are either (1) be unemployed or (2) lose part of your salary due to political ridiculousness? Why are those the two options?

OK, you know what? I'm a fed who makes $100K+ per year. I have an emergency fund and over 6 months of expenses in savings. Will I be able to weather a shutdown? Sure. But I'm also pregnant with my second kid, getting ready to pay for 2 daycares, trying to save for 2 college educations, and retirement. Dipping into my savings means I won't be able to put my money towards any of those while I build my savings back up. And while that's what savings are for, it is galling that I have to do this because the lunatic fringe of the GOP decided to put their own personal interests above the country's. I'm here, ready to do my job, and I won't get paid. They're not doing their jobs, and they will. That is some rank bullshit.

I have friends who are the same way and it's totally alarming how many people make six figures and live paycheck to paycheck. Totally alarming.

Alright folks, the bottom line is that it's infuriating that government employees are going to be penalized because the stupid Congress is refusing to do what they were elected to do (you know, their job).

Thank you. And all the clucking about how imaginary, hypothetical GS-15s aren't managing their money properly when the tea party won't let Congress pass a budget is just beautiful, people.

Yes, and op stated that in her initial posting. That is not the point of this thread.

So what is the point of this thread? "Many people in this country don't manage their money in a way that I believe is appropriate, based on the limited information I have regarding their financial situation. Some of those people are feds. Therefore, they shouldn't be allowed to complain that they are being shafted by 40 toddlers in bad suits." Is that it?

I stated multiple times that I oppose the shutdown and fully support government workers complaining about it.

Yes, I am surprised that people making six figures who have no dependents and no medical issues and low student loans have not managed to save enough to live for a few weeks without getting paid.

I think the point was: I have annoying friends who either don't budget well or aren't sharing the intimate details of their financial lives with me. Can you believe it?!?

No, I am not thanking my lucky stars for my federal job. I have worked 70 hours in the past week, and this is typical of this year. I do not see my child awake on most weekdays. I am sick of workig this hard and being underpaid and underappreciated.

Feel free to apply for a job in the private sector.
