yes, I do, I am one, that is why I am trying to open your eyes. We don't need to save for college and we don't use this term, we allocate. Also not into certain outward displays of luxury, but it doesn't mean we cannot afford them. |
This is totally not true. I have watched my parents build their wealth. As long as they were paying a mortgage, they did not buy luxuries. It didn't matter if the house they were paying off was 200k or 600k. They always put a lot in savings, in their 401k. After they paid off the house, they saved money for things like helping me buy a house or my education, which I actually didn't need. They have always put money into their assets and not "luxuries" which is why they have so much now. |
People making 500K are not necessarily millionaires, they can be after a certain number of years, but they also can be wasteful and not accumulate any wealth. They may live the lifestyle that would be regarded rich, which will lead to no savings, that is why they are not rich. |
Let me make it simple for you. Your parents are rich now, but they didn't used to be rich when they were paying off their mortgages and building their wealth, they were saving, investing, and now, they are rich. It takes time. People often confuse income with networth. They think if someone makes 250K or 500K they are rich. yes, they are if they also have the networth to prove it. But if they have just started a few years ago, they haven't had enough time to build the wealth to feel the financial security of being rich, especially, since incomes are not guaranteed and are unstable these days. Or if they are wasteful, they are not rich. One is only rich, when one accumulates enough wealth to generate income to live on and lead a certain lifestyle with at least a few luxuries or at least pay for basics without having to work a day in their lives. that is a low level of rich. High levels? the sky is the limit, think private jets, yachts, charity funds with their names, owning expensive artwork, major shares of companies, etc. Rich starts at 2 mil in some areas, and in DC or SF, or NYC probably at around 5 mil networth, although in DC you could do it for 3 mil unless prices go through the roof. You still have to work, because money can devalue fast, you need to work to keep up with your investments and/or businesses, or if you do have a gainful employment keep on piling up that cash. this is just a reality of what things cost these days, of course numbers were lower decades ago, much lower. |
| The battle over semantics by some "rich" people on this thread makes me think that they are not rich, but are just argumentative sock-puppets. |
| I have about $15M liquid and $5M in real estate. I really only stopped worrying once I hit $10M |
Seriously. I love that there's clearly one poster thinking that if he/she just screams enough, everyone will agree "rich " refers to accumulated we h rather than income. Good God. Let it go already. |
| If you live in a house bigger than 1200 sqrft and are not on food stamps , you are rich. Maybe because sooooo many people have given up working and are awaiting free healthcare and unemployment. |

Maybe you guys can answer... I'm 27 and my household income is 220k, no college education. How do you all build net worth? I didn't have any parents to put a down payment on my house, and my wife grew up in foster care. I'll probably leave the area to buy a house in a legitimate city, since NoVA is primarily welfare queens aka gov't contractors and related businesses.
I guess everyone around here is 'rich' because they rode the NoVA real estate boom to the top? |
What's middle class then? And what is poor? Children begging for food on the streets? Please crawl back to the 3rd world country you came from. |
Yes, HHI is all that matters, because income is permanent and guaranteed. The fools can believe whatever they want to believe, what do I care. |
I think all SAHMs are rich because they don't have to work and can live comfortably on their husbands' salaries - pretty much passive income for the wives. But their husbands are not rich because they can't stop working. What a disparity!

I am pissed I wasted my time reading that long & misguided piece of crap response. |
I admit that this is true for me. Sigh. |
