School supplies -- buy the best or is it just pooled for the whole class?

Every year we buy high quality supplies. Rigid plastic folders, five-star notebooks, hard back comp books, and every year my kids bring home floppy cellophane folders and dollar store thin floppy comp books, etc.
My solution...I buy extras. So when they come home with something junky, I just peel the label off and put it on a quality item that will last the whole year. That way I am ensuring my kids don't end up with junk, but not contributing to the problem by sending in crappy supplies.

Why don't you label your children's stuff before you send it to school on day 1?

Wow! We spent $20 in Alexandria for k. The items are pooled until 2nd grade, I think. Seventy seems outrageous before high school. Does that incllude a new back pack?

I'm not the PP you were asking, but in FCPS (1st grade) glue sticks ALONE will cost you $20. Apparently they spend 5 hrs a day every day glueing! (or is that gluing?)

That's complete BS. I purchased glue sticks for an entire kindergarten grade (2 classes) in NY (a donation to my former elemntary school). I bought 50 glue sticks and it ran me 8 bucks. Where are you shopping for glue sticks? Saks? Just go to Target! PS I got elmer's glue sticks. Oh yeah and 50 crayola crayon boxes was 25 bucks. Almsot everyone here has to buy school supplies so if you think anyone is going to believe that glue sticks "ALONE" cost $20 you must think we are all fools.

Agreed. If you buy only 2, it costs you about $2 at Target, Walmart and Staples. If you buy more, they price per stick goes down. I saw a 24-pack for $9.54 (not quite as good as 50 for $8, but still...). So, even with these higher prices, you can get 48 glue sticks for $20. I guess if you really want glue sticks from TIffany's...

The list specifically says not to label any supplies.

Ummmm..... to the ignorant B*TCHES ---- they only want the fat glue sticks and they want 18 of them per kid. They are usually a dollar per stick: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Elmer-s-Large-School-Glue-Stick-22g-3pk/17011268

I'm not talking about the cheap skinny elmers glue sticks which are like 25 cents a piece. But, I'm sure you know that already b/c you sure think you know everything.

Re: Glue sticks.

If I got a supply list requesting 18 per kid, I'd buy one pack of glue sticks, send it, and tell the teacher i assumed a typo. 18X20 = a lot of glue sticks. how is it possible to go through 360 in a school year. That's 2 a day, every school day for the class to completely use up.

Then you are a poor shopper because 1) the Walmart internet price is not what you get at the store (ignorant b&^#*(^*() and 2) there are these magical things called sales (ignorant *)(^(#^!!!)

While I'd admire your energy, PP, I would think twice before bothering yourself responding to Madam $20 Glue Stick. She's just expending useless breath trying to justify her resistance to "forced giving."

Forced. Giving.

Ignore her.

I think you are right. There are better uses for everyone's time.

The problem is the communal pools sound a lot like communism. And she is a tea bagger.

Go and volunteer in your child's class. I did every week when my child was in kindergarten through second grade. They use glue sticks like mad! Not just for art projects, but for gluing spelling words in the correct column, math items, etc. Each child went through at least one glue stick a week, no kidding. I was constantly going to the communal glue stick cabinet and refreshing the supplies for the students. I can not believe there are this many postings whing on about school supplies. Please redirect your energies to doing something positive for your child's school instead.
