I chose IT over a very well regarded DCPS (which seemed crazy because IT was a start up). But my DC who is in an upper grade is light years happier and more engaged at IT than at the DCPS school she previously attended (which I really loved). It was a difficult decision and we held her spot until the very end, but I have zero regrets.
Again, go with your gut and depending on your child's age, you may even want to ask them which school they prefer. I did and I was shocked by my DC's answer. She really wanted to go to IT! (I personally think she liked the idea of not having to wear a uniform ). But, I still couldn't understand why she was so ready to let go of the school she was at; a school where she was excelling.
I asked her about this recently and she said she was just kind of bored. My takeaway from our conversation was that her previous school's approach to teaching subjects was fairly routine and the learning experience was just "okay" even though I could clearly see her progress. Contrast that with IT where the teachers are challenged to come up with new and different ways to approach material and all of sudden she's skipping out of the house every morning and talking my ear off every afternoon about what went on in school that day.
I'm not saying go with IT. That's a personal choice and not every school is good for every child. But when I was stuggling over the decision and I finally managed to get quiet and listen to that still, small voice within--the right answer came to me.
