Harvard slashing PhD programs + layoffs

Exactly uplift our own citizens. How many American students get grants from China and India to study in their universities in science stem field. Probably could fit in a VW SUV because they won’t allow US cars into their closed markets. Enough!

That awful foreign talent. Like Einstein and the like.

Not at all, but why not put focus on brilliant Americans?

Because you can only keep America the leader in science and engineering by recruiting the best scientists in the world to the US. Brilliant Americans are completely welcome and have lots of advantages in the US system. But if you want the US to be the leader, you need the top talent period.

Science research grants are not charity. Grant money is exchanged for results.

But Harvard can free up cash to do propaganda and ideology stuff because the government pays for its research component. How is that hard to understand?

I know for a fact China offers scholarships to Americans and other foreign nationals to study in their top universities.

You need to read more than right wing propaganda.

Seriously??? Is this a serious question??

This post shows an astounding lack of critical thinking, logical thinking, and creative thinking.

This mentality is apparently prevalent in our country and is causing the unfortunate downfall of the U.S.

Some of you are acting as if Harvard is a god to whom we should bow down and send federal dollars, regardless of what they do.. It's not, and its administrators and leaders need to change their attitude.

This is crazy talk. The scientists want to do science, like treating cancer. The engineers want to be inventing new things. They have to justify every dollar they get in a grant through an extremely competitive proposal and review process, wherein they have to explain how the project would be a benefit. There is no "attitude" other than complete dismay at grant funding that had already been awarded being ripped away so they can't pay for supplies and equipment already ordered or pay their students and post docs.

The attitude you're hearing is all made up by the radical right who are doing their best to create a political foe out of science and engineering because they're too stupid to understand the research.

I agree as regards the scientists, but there is definitely an attitude demonstrated by Harvard's admin and leaders.

There is lots of funding specifically directed to US citizens, including NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. US citizen have tons of advantages, including being native English speakers. This is already baked into the system. Do some research and stop listening to stupid Republican talking points.

So the solution is to stop cancer research?

+1. If anything, the laser focus on Harvard is a success of right wing propaganda. Trump is cutting research funding across the board. All of the people saying "send it to the public universities!" are either uninformed or lying, because we were already funding research at public universities and that's being cut too.

Lots of the foreign students who study in the US are funded by their home country so they are basically free labor for US professors.

Harvard can fund its own research!

Honestly, I am more worried about American students coming out of HS and if they can compete with our watered down math and science in education.

They can, if we push them from an early age.

Solution is for Harvard's admin to visibly and strongly change their attitude (we all heard the former Harvard president) and/or increase funding to other research institutions. Harvard ain't the only one.
