Former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent Ian Roberts has been charged with being an illegal alien in possession of firearms.

As a non-citizen, Roberts illegally possessed four guns, according to court documents, including a Glock Model 19 nine-millimeter pistol, which was found wrapped in a towel under the driver's seat of the the district-owned vehicle he was driving before his arrest.

An "emergency trace" on the Glock pistol was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which "revealed that it was purchased ... Oct. 4, 2019, at a federal firearms licensee in North Little Rock, Arkansas," by a woman authorities believe to be Roberts' wife.

n a search of Roberts' home in Des Moines, authorities found three other guns, including:

A Sig Sauer Model P320 9-mm pistol, located under the cushion of a living room chair
A Remington Model 783.270 WIN caliber rifle, located in a case in the master bedroom closet
A Remington Model 870 20-gauge shotgun, located in a case in the master bedroom closet

On May 16, the School Board approved the appointment of Dr. Ian Roberts as the next Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools.

The Des Moines Public School Board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Ian Roberts as the Des Moines Public Schools’ new superintendent, effective July 1, 2023. Dr. Roberts was chosen through a comprehensive national search based on the leadership profile prepared by the Board after receiving input from staff, parents, students and community members. Dr. Roberts will succeed Interim Superintendent Matt Smith to lead the state’s largest school district comprised of 31,000 students across 64 school buildings.

“When considering candidates, the Board was looking for educational experience, academic excellence and a passion for innovation and inspiration, and we found those qualities and more in Dr. Roberts,” said Des Moines Public Schools Board Chair Teree Caldwell-Johnson. “Dr. Roberts’ focus on creating equitable experiences for students to thrive, paired with his commitment to continuous improvement, creates an exciting opportunity for our students, staff and community.”

Dr. Roberts currently serves as Superintendent of Millcreek Township School District located in northwest Pennsylvania. Dr. Roberts is a lifelong educator who has held the roles of Chief Schools Officer, Superintendent of Secondary Schools, Principal, and Senior Vice President of a charter management organization. He has experience leading schools in a number of large and mid-sized cities, including Washington D.C., Baltimore and St. Louis. He is a proven champion for creating equitable opportunities for all students to thrive and is dedicated to ensuring that focus is a central part of his work in Des Moines. Dr. Roberts has a varied and impressive background that ranges from being named George Washington University’s 2013 Washington D.C. Principal of the Year to competing in the 2000 Olympics as a track & field athlete.

“Leadership is about meeting people where they are and helping them to become even better, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead a strong organization like Des Moines Public Schools using the Board’s goals and guardrails to achieve educational and operational excellence,” said Dr. Ian Roberts. “I want to thank the Board for this opportunity, and I look forward to listening, learning and leading with input from my school community to increase opportunities for all students using empathy, cultural competency and continuous improvement to chart our path.”

Dr. Roberts holds numerous degrees and certificates including a master’s degree in education from St. John’s University and a doctorate from Trident International University. He also earned the Harvard University Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership certificate. He is married and outside of school he enjoys hunting, reading and spending time with his family and friends.

“I want to thank Interim Superintendent Matt Smith for his strong leadership of Des Moines Public Schools over the last year,” said Caldwell-Johnson. “The Board is grateful for his service and supportive of his decision to return to the associate superintendent position where he will partner with Dr. Roberts to continue to make a tremendous impact.”

*Note: the above news release updated to correct the Ed. D. at the request of Dr. Roberts in June 2023; the doctorate degree was from Trident International University, not St. John’s University.

She is the chair of the school board who hired him. And is now running for US Senate.

Oh, you're right:

Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris told reporters Monday that Roberts had been shortlisted by headhunters who conducted a criminal-background check. “There was nothing in the information that was given to us to allude to any question about his citizenship,” Norris said.

Norris previously served as White House chief of staff to first lady Michelle Obama, according to the school board website.

I know Jackie and she is telling the truth. I haven’t talked to her in a decade, but I know her from Lafayette and she’s a very upstanding person who is civic minded to the core. Her husband John ran for governor. They run their family with a military precision, her two oldest are in academies. She isn’t sloppy.

She was sloppy with this situation. Lots of red flags but they still hired him. And she has the audacity to tell the public to practice “radical empathy.” Another example of democrats favoring illegal aliens over citizens.
The board apparently knew he did not have his doctorate before they hired him but hired him anyway. Then, continued to refer to him as “Dr. Roberts.” They lied to the citizens of Des Moines.

How can you believe this? Can you tell me what the red flags were in his file? Can you tell me who he was running against, i.e. who else was on the shortlist.

He sounds like a conman just like Trump. It happens, right?

They conducted the search in secret.

Red flags:

1. Him not having a doctorate but claiming he did and the boars knew it.

2. Settlements that occurred in other districts he left.

Those are outlined in the article in this post:

No, you don’t get to post red flags by some rando blogger. It says in the article, he was here legally when hired. We’re done here. Nothing will convince you. Ironic though since you were also hoodwinked by a charlatan.

Did he obtain work authorization?

Crazy and bold makes you wonder how many undocumented are able to also fly under the radar and obtain ivy League degrees, public jobs and even register to vote?

Prior gun charges and deportation orders

He was also a dcps employee.

Wow!

In our school system you can’t chaperone a field trip without getting fingerprinted.

I personally know two undocumented people who works for FCPS despite their background screening system.

I'm not familiar with FCPS system, but if it is just submitting fingerprints to the FBI, all that's doing is checking to see if the fingerprints match any fingerprints taken during previous criminal activity. Legal status is NOT reported during such a check, unless the person has been charged and fingerprinted for that before.

Do these workers you mention not have to show a passport or birth certificate to begin work? That is what one would typically present as proof of citizenship. It's been a few years since I have started a new job, but I seem to remember that being a requirement for several of my previous jobs.

You keep trying to claim, year after year,

“oh, illegal aliens? Why no; I’m sure they never, ever illegally register and vote in U.S. elections. Noooooo.” (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Looks like you were wrong all along. Many of them unlawfully register, just like this guy did.

Hope there is a nationwide audit in the wake of this.

My district (not FCPS) requires new hires to show state ID and the SS card which sometimes can say “valid for work with DHS authorization”. If it says that, then proof of such authorization is requested. Visa status doesn’t come up on Livescan BG check.
I can easily see HR ppl not wanting to ask for proof of work authorization because a candidate is black and hints at racist treatment. Nobody wants to be called a racist.

To add, if someone is hired and then their work authorization expires, I can see how it can just slip through the cracks. My child was missing a mandatory vaccination and I’ve been asked to provide proof but then no one followed up. I can see how HR was intimidated by a super missing a paper or two.

That does nothing to prove citizenship.

After this crazy fiasco, hopefully school systems will start to check their employees. And not just the higher ups.

Fingerprints can be run through national databases like the FBI's Next Generation Identification (NGI) system to check for criminal records and for civil purposes, but this access is limited to authorized law enforcement and government agencies for criminal justice, immigration, and employment background checks. While these systems provide extensive databases of criminal and civilian prints, it's important to understand they are not a single "national database," and data can be incomplete.

By this logic, Elon Musk and Melania need to be detained and sent back as well.

More information coming to light:

A school employee in Baltimore filed a complaint against him due to being pressured into giving kids higher grades that were not deserved when he was principal of a charter school in Baltimore.

Unfortunately, the statute of limitations had run out and charges were dropped.
