Bc he was likely boring didn’t stand out and had nothing unique. |
1000+, stay away from CS, engineering & business majors |
Asian unhooked kid from non dmv, 3.94 uw gpa( high rigor), 1570 one try, good ECs and leadship positions, no national awards/crazy non for profits to show for, rejected at uva (ooo), upenn econ, but in at upitt honors with merit, umd (legacy), case western (merit), and attends nyu stern concentrating in finance. |
Stern loves high stats kids. |
esp true for asian males |
Really hate this kind of bad advice. Essentially asking kids to lie about their passion. What happens to integrity. These brilliant kids, if not in at ivies, still end up in very top school like Georgia tech, Harvey Mudd, CMU. |
Why Asians post here is beyond me given the racial stereotyping they encounter. |
+1 |
Not really. Bet those kids like math too and would prefer a T10 over GT or CMU. |
People always have their biases, if it not race it is something else. I tell my kids to tune out the noise and focus on what matters most. By posting here I do the same. |
My DS is also unhooked and has almost the same stats but 4.0/valedictorian and got in RD to four top-10/ivy as well as got Rodman scholar at uva(Echols for engineers). No national awards or nonprofit founding but did have two state-level honors as well as competitive admission summer programs(free not pay to play) and leadership with ECs. |
^applied in Engineering too. Go with what your kid likes even if it is a very competitive interest |
I agree with this, just apply more broadly/more schools than what higher schooler recommends and don't buy any merch/tell the family etc until admissions decisions. |
Sure that might work, get in A&S at a top 20 private as “undecided” and study physics or math since majors are open to anyone who gets into the school. However the AO’s at ivy-types have gone on record that they know students do this and they can decipher interests easily from ECs. They want authentic applications and can tell most of the time when they are not. They presume, correctly, that someone applying to say Duke “undecided” yet has a lot of math and coding related ECs had a goal of CS or math major. The major is not restricted, no major is there or at almost all ivy-level. However they do not want students who have all the same interests and all piling into the current trend of Stem. The “undecided” with math/coding ECs will be grouped with those who state they want math or CS when picking the class. Not picking on Duke they all do it. They have to in order to have some sort of variety among undergraduates. |
Your kid was the val. that's why he got in. |
