Like if you are a relatively unknown actress, you must either agree to go topless or simulate sex (even in roles playing teenaged girls) in order to land a part on an HBO show, among other similar examples. It’s such a gross industry but people just seem not to see that part of it—just the celebrity and glitz and money, impacting attitudes, fashion, and culture “on the ground”. I know no man is an island and I can’t pretend to be immune to these trickle-down influences, but I wish I could find more people who feel the same way as I do who are neither super religious nor super crunchy because I don’t fit well into either of those groups. So much misogyny and other violence towards women just totally normalized, infiltrating our screens and frying our brains.

totally agree with you. I'm not super religious but common human decency and not looking the other way when it comes to exploitation and violence just for a gratuitous sex scene on tv really bothers me. It's not the scene itself- it's the culture of exploitation that is supported by it.

Designing Women and the Golden Girls by contrast still hold up.

just rewatched designing women last year and it is still so so good and I was a kid who didn't even like it much when it first aired. going to watch Murphy brown next.

I was just discussing this the other day. He shouldn’t have resigned.

Now this might be the most unpopular opinion in this thread for me personally. Watched it last Christmas season and was absolutely shocked at how terrible it was.

Cindy was, yes. But Chrissy’s a classic.

I'm not sure there *are* unpopular opinions --I've been reading these and thinking, "A lot of people agree with you" -- but here goes:

The Beatles were only OK

Al Franken, Michael Richards, Kathy Griffin. They are probably so very very peeved at the shameless people running around today with zero consequences to much much worse behavior. It's nauseating.

The best actresses who can actually act instead of simply playing themselves are few and far between (and generally not nearly as famous).

I respect this opinion and don't even really disagree with it, but I don't think American-esque charisma should be devalued. I actually think we have too few of those stars these days, and that's a problem in getting people to go to the theaters. Just look at how terrible Sydney Sweeney was in Anyone But You.

Also a quibble, because I get your broader point, but I wouldn't group Jennifer Aniston in the same crowd that includes Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, and Sandra Bullock.

Agreed.

Aniston had the hair but has always been devoid of any personality or charisma.

Her nips frequently making themselves known on Friends were at least as important as her hair.

Ray’s wife on Everyone Loves Raymond is a sadistic bully.

No, it would have been much better if Mr. Drummond was doing Mrs. Garrett. At least that would have alleviated the suspicions that Drummond had a “special” interest in the boys.

Anything Emma Stone has done, Michelle Monaghan could have done better.

Agreed.

Deborah was the worst.

I'm a Friends fan but allowing her nips to take over was a mistake. The show runners should have fixed this in wardrobe.

That may be an unpopular opinion but I agree 100%! Also enjoyed Kelly Osbourne's commentary on that show. I learned a lot about fashion from watching it. It was snarky with a side of education.
