Pulling 8th Grader (Longfellow) out for week and half before winter recess

If they do 8 days they should so 3 before and the week after. Maybe we'll get another blizzard in the first week of January like January 2025.

Might be more expensive. OP has said that is one of the reasons.

She said it gets expensive after December 19th, I'm not sure why they can't leave slightly before then and miss the first five potential days (some of which may be snowed out, reducing the absence days).

I think the OP should also consider that her son may get sick in January, especially after long international flights. It will be the height of cold and flu season, and it may be harder for him to make up the work if he is sick or has to miss even more school.

Different experience here. My middle-school age niece travelled with us internationally, missed school, and her teachers were happy to provide the work ahead of time. That may not be your experience so I’d definitely discuss it with the teacher beforehand and adjust your expectations accordingly. I just think it’s not universal that teachers don’t see any value in supporting family time.
