That’s what a lot of these campuses spend so much of their money on. If they dialed down the financial aid, the student experience could be a lot better and they wouldn’t have such limited faculty. |
What? Frost Library and Valentine are ugly, but I wouldn't consider any of their buildings "in disrepair." |
We visited Amherst this spring. Definitely rough around the edges for such a rich school. |
We thought Amherst campus and buildings were very nice when we visited, with exception of Frost library and Valentine Hall which is being replace anyway with new student complex by 2026. It’s a very large 1000 acre campus filled with wildlife sanctuary and trails with the backdrop of Holyoke Mountains |
The bottom line is that Middlebury remains firmly within the small category of crap shoot liberal arts colleges when it comes to admissions. Whether in a given year it’s 11, 12 or 13 percent is immaterial. OP says the rate dropped to a five year high, but really that’s only because there was a two year spike and we’re now back to the historical average. |
we're a little above historical range.
middlebury has really great career placement now. my kid went elsewhere, but I dug deep into those numbers and among SLACS, williams, midd and cmc stand out. |
The spike happened at every top SLAC. But Middlebury is somewhat unique for a top SLAC to have this significant a decline from its spike while changing to a “fill 70% of class ED model,” a model which reduces overall admissions rates. The fact that Middlebury’s rates are going up cannot therefore be attributed to statistical anomaly— by rational posters, at least. |
IMO, Middlebury is a top 20-25 LAC. Williams and Bowdoin rankings can overcompensate for remote location Midd’s 19th tie can’t. As pp mentioned it’s 1.6 billion endowment is average among top25 LACs. It seems like Colgate to have lost a lot of appeal but if your family is paying 90-95k a year does your kid want to spend 4 years in long, freezing cold winters looking at cows-no thanks. There are multiple reasons Davidson and Vandy are hot schools now.
|
IMHO, Davidson shouldn't even be in the top 25. Talk about a school that's rough around the edges. |
You dug deep into the numbers, aka you found the schools with a bunch of Econ majors. Most top lacs have amazing outcomes but a lot of students need to go to grad school before making their money. |
actually was looking at job placement for Philosophy majors, but thanks for playing! |
There’s a lot of philosophy Econ double majors out there. 50% of CMC majors in Econ- for any major, you’re likely looking at a double major in economics. |
Amherst and Williams are the go to LACs for the foreseeable future. They have the cache, prestige, ratings, and huge endowments. No schools will catch them. Middlebury is one of 20-25 schools that will fluctuate but there is a trend to schools in more urban areas and lots of full pay kids are going to SEC schools and BIG 10 schools.

I'm not cooking so much as I am stirring the pot. Apparently my first sentence was too subtle in relaying my intention to some. |
