Not OP. Yes, disappointing...but not shocked at all. I applaud OP for having the guts to be honest and offer insight.

How can you do your job and sleep at night? It would break my heart. I would rather be unemployed than uproot families who have been living here for a long time.

So much judgment. Some might learn something that could help improve the situation.

Have you read the OP???? Obviously not.

What service?! It’s a paid job. And it’s often a disservice since the people they throw out do jobs Americans deem too lowly to ever do themselves. Ask farms and restaurants that are massively understaffed at present. Let’s not pretend that OP was risking his life pulling people out of burning buildings.

Not OP, but are you really asking such a stupid question? You yourself said "in the U.S. illegally".

It's like asking a police officer if they think all rapists, drug dealers (basically anyone who breaks the law) should be arrested and put in jail.

Can't wait to see OP's response.

Oh I was very intentional.
Common sense is lost on so many people today. They think trespassing is ok if you don’t steal or rob. I wouldn’t be surprised if even some ICE agents, past and present, support amnesty of some kind.

Well...to be honest we have so many millions in the US illegally that realistically it would be impossible to actually deport them all....I think there should be amnesty granted...but not a blanket amnesty. Rather, amnesty based on certain criteria (i.e., having lived in the US for 20+ years, having children born in the US, etc.) but at the same time no amnesty for those who committed crimes or are in jail.

Are you the OP?

Also, once you grant the amnesty to anyone, any category, it incentivizes coming over here for for so many more. Yes there are many already and it will take a long time to get them deported (some will die before it’s their turn, sorry for being grim) but with no more people coming illegally or under fake asylum claims or from countries with high rates of visa overstay there is probably an end in sight. Honestly just requiring immigration status checks (not like the ones today, no violence in masks, polite requests for for certain documents), and it will reduce the number of people wiling to be here illegally.

NP — Reagan granted amnesty in the 80s and that was supposed to be the end of it. Politicians on both sides have been cowards. The fact that this is still an issue shows you how much they need the conflict to continue. Crossing borders without permission, overstaying visas, etc is wrong. Not going after companies knowingly hiring people without proper papers is wrong. Not having a trustworthy operational system to track who is here with temporary papers and knowing if they’ve left is also wrong. Parents who crossed here without papers and had kids here have are wrong. (The kids are a victim of their parents actions.) splitting families up in detention is also wrong. Not processing people to determine their status before deportation also wrong. Not seeking asylum at the closest country also wrong. So much wrong. Resisting legit deportation also wrong.

I’ve appreciated OPs comments and his work. For those how dont bother reading, OP retired 10 years ago and was doing important work, unlike what they are doing now.

My question, how do we get people to leave ICE? How do we make it so toxic, people leave? What type of people sign up for this job and how do we reach them morally?

ALL Americans in the history of this country are either Native Americans/American Indians, immigrants, slaves or refugees. Let’s not lie to ourselves that we are somehow superior and on the right side of history here.

ICE was turned into baby sitters for four years. Everyone knows it.

Where would they go - the job market is terrible with all the feds who have already quit or been fired out there. Ask me how I know.

You’re getting closer to the truth: much of the agency is a jobs program for entitled men who would otherwise be unemployable. Few are doing the tough investigations and intel gathering on the hardcore criminals like human traffickers.

Won’t someone think of effects on the 1st-order ICE-economy: tattoo artists, CrossFit gyms, and Camero dealers?

Are you aware that many entered legally (under Temporary Protected Status which was an immigration category created by President Bush allowing the GOP to dodge tackling immigration reform) but because TPS is under the whims of the executive, many have been made "illegal" (after settling here with jobs and paying taxes) with the status yanked back? It is not so simple as to label people "illegal" and paint a black/white picture.

So...how do you feel about public defenders or any lawyers who represent "bad guys" in court and sometimes even get them off on a technicality?? They are just doing their job and applying the rule of law. Are you really going to sit in judgement of them too?

Honestly...that's one of the main issues I have with both Republicans and Democrats -- society as a general being way too judgemental.

At the end of the day, it’s part of the mission of the agency. The are legal means to becoming a US citizen that are available to everyone.

I retired in 2014. No to boast, but I put many many bad criminals in jail during my 30-year career (gang members, drug cartel members, corrupt cops, people exploiting children, terrorists attempting to obtain WMD components, former foreign regime members who killed or tortured hundreds of people, etc). It wasn’t just immigration work.
