GDS Senior Prank

I agree it’s really spot-on writing, but I still question why parents were the target of the prank.

According to my 9th grader, they had plenty of fun and silly stuff at school.

I am a GDS parent, and this was pretty much my emotional progression, all in the space of about an hour.

That said, I didn’t expect the senior prank to be directed at parents like this. I always thought such pranks are aimed at administrators, faculty, or other students. As a parent of a junior who hasn’t hired an outside counselor, I was googling college counseling services. Luckily I hadn’t actually phoned any before the prank was revealed. So no harm, no foul. But it didn’t make me laugh.

My first read of this is that I didn't think the prank was particularly funny but the fact that you, in the span of a few hours, had started goggling college counseling services makes me laugh. You people are wound so tight. (My kids attend a different private).

You will be shocked when you learn how many of your kids' classmates have outside college counselors. Even more than have diagnoses that allow them extra time on tests.

I get that. It's well-written and well-executed as a prank. But they pranked the parents of the 9th-11th grades, and not their own 12th grade parents. Why? I also think that the only group of parents likely to be freaked out by that email were the parents of 11th graders. College admissions work is in full swing for the juniors at private schools already.

Then this is even stranger.

No. They pranked the school that attracts these tightly wound parent types.

They spoofed an email from head of school and head of high school on school email template sent to all high school parent emails that the entire college office was resigning at the end of the school year.

They accessed the school directory and scraped all parent emails.

Pandemonium ensued from the parents.

School sent a prank notice 2 hours later to parents

I’m sure some kids will face disciplinary action for this

But I give them an A+ for tech prowess and creativity.

LOVE IT-

There is nothing about this eight page thread that doesn't prove that GDS is the most insecure inside the beltway school. God damn, those parents are snobnoxious.

This is a sweet thread. Light and entertaining. Why are you railing on GDS parents?

My son is a junior caught in the middle of the college process and this chaos has completely derailed his studies. I spent the morning frantically reaching out to the school, believing my son’s college plans were now in jeopardy, and I had to miss several vital meetings with my working group to fix this mess. My son is now in an environment of anarchy and vandalism, right when he should be hard at work preparing for the SAT. I find it frankly disgusting on the part of the senior class, who must know from experience how difficult this time of the year is. Am I really the only one who wants to see some consequences enforced? Maybe not expulsion, but perhaps a suspension and some restrictions on the usual end-of-year senior festivities. I think cancelling their prom would be more than fair.

You might need to chill a bit. I’m a GDS HS parent and I thought this was a clever prank. Not sure why you think this would derail your juniors college chances. Our Junior at a different school had their counselor report they were leaving in June and new counselor was starting in August. Nothing was derailed. It was frustrating but they got into college.

I think the post to which you replied might’ve been written by the pranksters 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

Maybe - except I feel like I can picture a specific Jr parent that would post this (that over the top parent is a big outlier )

I’m a GDS parent, and I cannot think of a single parent who is that over the top. Absolutely no one thinks that an hour-long prank “derailed his studies.”
