Let's hope not. They should spend time on fundamentals, not superficialities with significant changing costs. |
Not official but I doubt after this they will change plans - it will be John Thompson High School. https://www.washingtonian.com/2025/06/05/dc-council-poised-to-rename-high-school-after-basketball-legend-john-thompson/ |
pretty sure it is a done deal. |
Yes, but they did solve the problem for many of the students who are most likely to actually go to Macarthur, those who live off New Mexico, in Glover Park, and about half the Eaton catchment area. |

Isn't the name of the school changing?
MacArthur name is temporary and it will be renamed. But I don’t think they’ve released that info yet, have they? Is this a joke? |

My problem is that one thing he is known for is protesting a proposed requirement by NCAA that students meet specific academic requirements to get sports scholarships. While that stance is looking out for disadvantaged athletes, it is not exactly promoting the academic part of university education. |
Had no idea this was the new name.

Isn't the name of the school changing? I wonder if we could advocate for another bus. |
for just spring valley? |
Parent of a rising 10th grader: yes, school name is changing and the students voted on what they want the name to be. It hasn’t been announced yet.
AP classes: MacArthur hosted an AP Base Camp yesterday for 10th graders. Our kid said it was helpful to meet with the teachers so that they could get mentally prepared for the work load. Commute: some kids commute over 90 minutes each way on public transit so that they can have AP classes and a more academically focused school environment. That is actually one of the good things about DCPS/charter system. It gives families and students public, accessible options if their in-bound school does not meet a student’s needs. No school is perfect, public or private. As parents, I hope we all want to make it the best experience possible for the kids so they can develop into curious, hardworking , smart and compassionate adults. Fun fact: Warren Buffett is a product of DCPS. He went to Woodrow Wilson H.S. (now known as Jackson Reed) |
So DCPS will have a Thomas, a Thomson, and a Thompson. Fun. |
