Admitted Student Days- hoopla or ho hum

Has anyone been to any of the Catholic school ones? Specially interested in any of the following: Fairfield, Providence, Holy Cross, BC, and Villanova.

+1
We loved VT’s though we were there for the college of liberal arts. It was eye opening to see the kids who would actually be potential students/friends/roommates, rather than just random people on a tour. And the school did a fantastic job of welcoming and answering all our questions.

How big an impact did weather have on your kid’s decision?

I just posted about VT. We went to admitted students day in April and experienced three seasons in one day! Early spring weather, cool and beautiful, blooming flowers and trees - and then midday the temps dropped and it started snowing! It made it all very fun though and everyone raided the bookstore for hats and sweatshirts. It just made my daughter love it even more. The day ended warming up again.

Honestly, I think it is better to go when the weather is cold. It is going to be cold a large part of the school year, so how do they feel about the school in this sort of weather?

Yes, the ones we attended included ED admits.

I agree. If you can get hyped even when the weather sucks, that’s a good sign.

For my ‘24 daughter we narrowed down top top 3 (with cost being biggest factor)

JMU
VT
UofSC

All of them were great and worth going to. We had previously done tours/open houses at all, but still think this was worth it.

Bowdoin did a good job. A couple of panels (one on student life, the other academic), parent social separate from the students, club and academic fairs. Lots of opportunity for admitted students to bond. Can't remember if it was a full two days or 1 1/2.

Daughter chose it over two other NESCACs. Happy with decision.

That was my original thinking too. Thank you!

These were my kid’s as well. The visits do make a huge difference. They are happily ensconced in their sophomore year at one of these schools!

She's applied to LACs but won't hear back until late March from most of them, and her spring break is early this year- so we'll have a short turnaround time to plan visits. Anyone attend admitted student days at any of the following: Hamilton, Vassar, Carleton, Smith, MHC? Are admitted student days that much more beneficial than just visiting and sitting in on a class or two, especially if you need to miss school to attend?

Carleton did a great job! We were glad we went.

I enjoyed my admitted students day at Michigan. The school is really good at making the vibes feel good

How are these events for quiet introverted kids? I'm not sure mine would feel confident enough at the moment to think of any questions and actually ask them of faculty, or mix with other kids and find a roommate!

Specifically thinking of Pitt, Fordham, and Loyola Maryland, if anyone has thoughts on these schools...

Seriously, we are clearly not raising John Snow types, they can't handle 3 months of winter??

Bowdoin did a great job - a 2 day affair. Student could attend a class of their choosing, dine in the dining hall, the usual academic and activities fairs, but then they also had a dinner for the kids and a list of things going on that night for kids to attend. Some of it was planned for admitted students (a dessert party at one of the houses) but some of it was just stuff that they had going on a random Thursday night: concert, newspaper meeting, etc.

And the food! The food was amazing and turns out not only for admitted student days, but every day of the year.
