2nd Grade Teacher wears a mask

Anonymous
My kid’s fourth grade teacher wore a mask all year last year. It was fine. She was a great teacher and he didn’t care at all.

As someone who has survived cancer, this isn't a reason to wear a mask. Actively under treatment? Different story.

You know how many people would need to wear masks if this was a widely disseminated recommendation from oncologists? A lot.

Who are you to decide that for someone else?

People are free to comment on it when it’s thrown out as a reason teachers mask.

Here is my observation. People who have anxiety about Covid come up with all sorts of reasons to say they mask and at least some of them (not all of them) are bullshit and people know it. These are the same people who become really nasty about this issue on anonymous forums.

You mental health issues as you are obsessed over peole masking and are concerned about why others mask. Kindness is helpful. No one owes you an explaination.

Unfortunately, I fell ill with Covid in March 2020. We now know that several families at my school were sick at the time. That illness left me vulnerable to infection and with long Covid. If I can’t mask, I can’t safely teach. Though I am now partially disabled, I still want and need to be a productive professional.

My colleagues mask for various reasons. One is pregnant but has not shared that news at work. Another is a diabetic. Their health conditions and reasonable accommodations are not anyone else’s business.

Several times I’ve read on this forum that “No one is going to mask to protect the immune compromised. We’re done with masking and never going back.” Then someone else, or perhaps the same person, will berate people who *do* mask as OCD and crazy. Some of us are still vulnerable in the Covid era. I’m not sorry that reality is inconvenient for entitled sociopaths. I sincerely hope that some of you do take this issue to your principals so that the administrators can look you in the eye and tell you how absurdly unreasonable you are.

It's not just covid. We all forgot that seasonal flu kills every year. Turns out there is not lasting immunity to many viruses. Some people simply have rent to pay and don't want to spend their precious 10 vacation days being sick.

Do masks actually help?

It stopped me from getting covid over two pregnancies. My baby was older during delta, stopped masking, had it within a couple months. It was an n95 tho. People make fun of the maskers in the car, but I did that sometimes so I didn't have to alcohol my hands to take the mask off between errands. I have a horrendous passport photo for my efforts.

NP here. You are projecting. Clearly you have some mental issues yourself.

I am glad it helped you. I wore a mask but still got Covid unfortunately. Is there an actual study about masks?

Was it a surgical mask? Unfortunately I think they are useless. Even an n95 with heavy exposure is probably not enough

Respect her choice to protect herself.

I guarantee the kids aren't bothered by it. It's only the adults that seem to have problems with masks.

My kid’s teacher wore a mask much longer than most because her spouse was critically ill and immune compromised. I’m sure jackholes like OP would have been relieved when he died and the teacher stopped wearing a mask.

There are a lot of studies. In fact, 100 of them recently went through a Gold Standard Review -

The new gold standard review of 100 studies finds:

- masks are effective in reducing transmission of respiratory diseases

- N95 respirators are significantly more effective than medical or cloth masks

- mask mandates are effective in reducing community transmission

"Masks and respirators for prevention of respiratory infections: a state of the science review"

Obviously OP’s kid didn’t go to school during Covid so she’s oblivious to the fact that kids in many states all across the country went to school in masks and learned from people wearing masks and did just fine. OP, I don’t mean this flippantly, but you may have hearing loss that has snuck up on you if you feel that you are reliant on seeing facial expressions or reading lips to understand what is being said.

Also, my DD’s teacher wore a mask all last year. She takes a half day once a month for chemo infusions to treat an autoimmune disease. She shared that with our kids but she didn’t have to and it would have been inappropriate to question her mask even if she told us nothing.

This is true. For every person with a high risk factor that makes flu, COVID, RSV, etc dangerous, there are multiple other people who’s anxiety turned into a permanent paranoia state and are now afraid of ALL illnesses, COVID and otherwise. We all know someone like this and also know they’re the ones that get hyper reactionary and defensive whenever the topic comes up.

The vast majority of people know this to be true. The posters on these threads ARE the health anxiety types and come out in droves. Whatever, keep it to yourself and I’ll keep my pity to myself.
