Nobody does melancholy and depressing like Townes Van Zandt. “Waiting Around to Die” ftw.

I think you need to listen to some country. lol

That would be Carrie Underwood “Before he cheats”

Right now, he's probably slow dancing
With a bleached-blonde tramp
And she's probably getting frisky
Right now, he's probably buying her some fruity little drink
'Cause she can't shoot a whiskey
Right now, he's probably up behind her with a pool-stick
Showing her how to shoot a combo
And he don't know

[Chorus]
I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped up four-wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights
Slashed a hole in all four tires
Maybe next time, he'll think before he cheats

Verse 2]
Right now, she's probably up singing some
White-trash version of Shania karaoke
Right now, she's probably saying, "I'm drunk"
And he's a thinking that he's gonna get lucky
Right now, he's probably dabbing on
Three dollars worth of that bathroom Polo
Oh, and he don't know

[Chorus]
Oh, that I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped up four-wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights
Slashed a hole in all four tires
Maybe next time, he'll think before he cheats

[Bridge]
I might've saved a little trouble for the next girl
'Cause the next time that he cheats
Oh, you know it won't be on me
No, not on me

[Chorus]
'Cause I dug my key into the side
Of his pretty little souped up four-wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights
Slashed a hole in all four tires
Maybe next time, he'll think before he cheats

I’m the PP with the super cheesy list but also wanted to add Carrie Underwood’s Dirty Laundry:
All those midnights sneaking in
"I'm late again, oh, I'm so sorry"
All the Ajax in the world ain't gonna clean your dirty laundry

I'm surprised not to see Adèle on this list. She has a lot of sad songs about break up.

Linda Ronstadt - Long, Long Time

Linda Ronstadt’s Poor Poor Pitiful Me and her cover of When Will I Be Loved are also great.

Billy Joel’s And So It Goes

(super cheese alert) I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me

For the upbeat list, Part of Me by Katy Perry about her divorce from Russell Brand.

The entire Gaslighter album by the (formerly Dixie) Chicks is outstanding in this capacity.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions - still working through some of them. I put the list on last night and had such a good cry my chest hurt this morning. I get that’s not everyone’s thing but I needed it.

As a PP asked, here is the first working of the list. It’s a living thing by and I’m likely to add some of the amazing suggestions I don’t know from here, just don’t have the chance to get there.
