Social security taxes are linked to benefits. There is a max tax and also a max benefit. If you lift the cap on the tax but leave the benefit capped, you have fundamentally changed the nature of the program and gutted the bipartisan support for it.

Republicans have been trying to kill social security since before it was adopted. Yes it is a state pension but it is also the greatest anti-poverty program this country has seen and Republicans would rather gut SS and cut taxes.

The idea that SS can be “protected” if we let Republicans drive up deficits makes no sense (and it always Republicans who drive up deficits).

And also for selfish reasons — I want the person fixing my meal in a restaurant to be healthy.

I want their children to be educated so they can be productive, but we both want the same thing for different resasons.

Supreme Court ruled many years ago (Plyer vs Doe) that children have a right to education regardless of immigration status.
