If you make 250K stop begging for money and use your savings...

Nope. Disagree. If some kids get to go for cheaper, then they all should. Why should UMC -not wealthy- have to deplete their savings? College should not be an economic field leveler.

Then you are a LUCKY PERSON! Because that is exactly how it works at the tiny number of meets full need schools. Every family goes according to their ability to pay. So no one pays more of their assets than another!

Now, if you are saying you want your net amount to be the same as a poor person's... well I am guessing you are not saying that since you are so concerned about fairness, because that would be MASSIVELY unfair, right?

Should an automobile cost less for a poor person?

An automobile does, in fact, cost MORE for a poor person. A much larger percentage of their income. As do all fixed taxes like tolls. College is one of the rare items that is fair, in that the college awards you THE GIFT OF FINANCIAL AID (that they have no obligation to give anyone) to you with the same formula everyone gets.

You can always switch places with them anytime you want! Going that way is easy to accomplish. So you have that advantage also! See, fair for everyone!

If you want great merit, you don’t pursue the top 50.

Also CWRU may give great merit but URochester does not.

PP said: "Some top schools offer merit - maybe not the tippy top, but plenty of top 50 schools offer merit regardless of income/assets." Which one of you is lying?

CWRU is the only one in top 50 that offers a lot of merit to a lot of people. Even Rochester doesn't offer it to most.

Signed,

parent of UR student on full pay who had $42K/year at CWRU, who got nothing from the other 3 T50 schools they were accepted at (and was smart enough to know that only CWRU was likely to give some). However, everything above 50 offered them 30-40% of tuition. So you don't have to go far to get great money

If you have high HHI or savings, feel that full pay or near full pay at a private is a ripoff and unfair, your solution is to accept the fact that college costs are insane and attend an in-state university.

"Plenty" of top 50 schools offer it but not to everyone, but to small numbers of students making it a bad strategy for chasing merit aid as your odds are very small.

Other colleges will over merit awards to a large percentage of their admits, making that a better strategy for chasing merit aid as your odds of receiving it are much higher.

Do you really need this explained to you? Or are you just being petulant?

If the "odds are very small" as you claim, then why does Selingo call these top 50 schools buyers?

He doesn’t. Maybe you should read the book or work on your reading comprehension?

How did you get the gates scholarship?

I saw that for Gates Scholarships, students must have a household income of $80,000 or less per year.
