Great! Hope those on whom they're focusing will contribute money to the cause. |
It isn’t that they are focusing on different perspectives, it is that all they are focusing on is the fact that they are focusing on different perspectives. They are skipping the actual stories. |
I used to love NPR. I grew up listening to it and until recently listened to it all the time. But I listen a lot less now. It became so preachy. The stories are all about oppressed people and white privilege. I don't like trump, but there coverage was so biased. And the hosts are just annoying. All their "ums" and "ahs" and chit chatty delivery. I listen to a lot more Cspan and BBC. I also stopped donating |
Also, they are losing the next generation of listeners because my kids are hearing a lot less of NPR. And kids are pretty aware. Four years ago, my tween DC was listening to a story and noted how biased it was. I was both surprised and impressed and it was an eye opening moment for me. |
All of this. Lifelong Dem, nonprofit worker, not a troll. NPR has been echo chamber fluff for years now. Maybe it’s changed back, for the better, in the past 2-3 years but I wouldn’t know because they veered so far off course that I stopped listening altogether. I miss it. |
How is this an Entertainment and Pop Culture discussion? |
THIS. BWAHAHAHAHA. Zero chance they would green light two straight males yukking it up and telling jokes now. |
You can't really get a sense of what the difference is from one podcast. It is what they cover over and over, and what they never cover. I just opened up The Economist to see what is on their front page. One of the first articles is about England's transgender care and takes aim at both the US progressive approach (as too lax and harmful to children and women's sports) and the US conservative approach (too harsh). You won't hear that story on NPR. It is not just about having a more global approach. It is about not covering certain stories and not fairly examining both points of view. A second example is whenever they talk about Trump and NATO, someone has to make the joke under the guise of fact-checking that Trump clearly doesn't understand NATO because he thinks we're supposed to be spending on other countries' defense. We all get that Trump comes off as an idiot, and that NATO doesn't literally require us to actually pay other countries' armies but they're so busy mocking Trump that they can never get around to discussing the underlying criticism of NATO members that other countries haven't -- until Putin invaded Ukraine -- been spending what NATO requires for their own defense. To be clear, I do still listen to NPR sometimes but I don't listen to it first because I want to get a fair picture of the news, and that is best obtained elsewhere. |
So this is also my problem with the current state of public debate. I would LOVE to understand the smart person’s version of the conservative policy arguments, not a caricatured version that’s basically like “uh duh I hate immigrants” or whatever. The better I understand what exactly is the debate about, the better I can formulate my own (lefty!) arguments. NPR has been too much in the camp of “progressives good and noble, conservatives bad and stupid” for too long now. |
+1 Ditto |
One approach that's worked well for me is to use the NPR app, then choose Morning Edition or All Things Considered. Then you can just skip the stories you've heard before, are too triggering, or are more woke BS. |
Anyone listen to DemocracyNow? They followed a similar path. I used to be a big fan but the Trump election broke them. In 2016 they did many stories on the Clinton Foundation corruption. But in 2020 they did zero stories critical of Biden. Of course they've gone around the bend with anti-Israel stories every day now. |
If you think NPR is boring, stale, and predictable try watching Fox News of MSNBC! I swear I think you have to be slightly unhinged to ply your brain with that crap. |
Ma'am this is a Wendy's. |
I hate that being rational is being politicized and called "progressive". The "other side"/pov is looney tunes and there is zero policy debate when one side literally has no platform. |
