I don't get the Eclipse madness!

For all those traveling- please be kind and respectful of the locals. My parents live in the path of totality and there’s been some pretty ugly behavior by tourists already and they’re worried about them all getting drunk and driving later today. The locals are ready for this to be over already (it’s also forecast to be cloudy there now, boo).

It's the new craze. And some people just get obsessive about things. It's ok to be excited about it. Maybe some people's hobby is this.

It's better than the screen. I think it's sad you rather look at a screen than to be outside on a nice day experiencing a natural phenomenon.

There are plenty of folks who are planning to go outside for it, they’re just not driving hundreds of miles in search of the better view.

Yes but that’s not instagram worthy.

Yes, Trump looked at it without the glasses. It was a viral moment.

The ancient Mayans & Aztecs understood this!

Whelp, nothing happened in 2017, so there goes that theory.

The one last year was an annular eclipse. That is when the moon is at it's furthest distance from the Earth. In that one, you get a much larger halo effect of the sun and it isn't as impressive. It looks kind of like this:

What will happen on Monday is a total solar eclipse. The moon is closer to the earth and will block out much more of the sun. In the total eclipse, it gets darker, more like full dusk rather than early sunset. The animals and insects get confused and you'll hear anywhere from silence to odd patterns normally not heard. In the middle of the afternoon, it will feel like the period just after sunset when it's getting near dark. The distance means that you will have more light diffusion and get more "special effects" rather than just a donut of light. You will get more light phenomena like these:

Thanks for sharing these photos, I feel less sad that I won’t get to see totality - too many hours driving to Maine from Massachusetts and I didn’t want to deal with the traffic and crowds.

Here in eastern Massachusetts we will see some of it - that’s pretty cool. Maybe if I’m still kicking in 20 years I can see it then.

I couldn’t get any glasses so I am scared to go outside.

"Folks" is back in style.

I can drive in this right? I don't have the glasses but you're not supposed to wear them driving. Can I just not look straight up at the sky? I'd like to leave my office at some point.

We got a break in the clouds in downtown Toronto and I just looked out. Looks kinda like a firey sunset.

No - I thought you weren't supposed to look at eclipses without the glasses. Obviously can't wear the glasses driving even if I had them.

You can be outside without looking at it.
