would you allow your 17 year old and friend to travel alone in Vietnam for 2 weeks?

I feel like I’m the most lax parent I know and free range and I don’t think I would unless they were in a tour group.

The main thing I would be concerned about is their riding motorbikes and getting into an accident (or getting stopped by police because I’m pretty sure Americans can’t get the right kind of international license, bit a little cash can take care of that).

Motorbikes are the top concern imho. Regardless of whether they are driving or riding, though especially the former. Hard no from me, but I know they’re hard to avoid.

Then I’d have frank conversation about massages. And to not go to any rooms with any women.

Food safety

Political safety.

No drugs.

Forgot to add mosquito safety. I’d permethrin their clothes before they left, book hotels with AC, and review deet protocols.

Yes. I traveled as a woman at 18 in Turkey and was smart about it. As long as they are aware of dangers (mostly to watch out what they drink, moderate how much and never leave it unattended) they should be fine. I’ve traveled the world and the most danger I’ve seen is on my block in DC - way more dangerous than most countries unfortunately.

Boys, no. I’d be worried they’d sleep with prostitutes.

I wouldn’t have thought about that but you are right!
.

This. The sex industry in south east Asia is no joke. I’d be on if my son traveled in East Asia but not Vietnam or other South East Asian countries. My older brothers best friend went to Thailand for a year as a high school exchange student t and it was surreal the stuff he was exposed to that year. I’d be more inclined to let my DD go before I sent teen son.

I’m not financially in a place to rescue should anything go wrong but if I were. I might be ok with it.

Pp above. The pics he had of the most gorgeous trans prostitutes— never forgot them from 35 yrs ago.

This is literally NOT POSSIBLE. Hotels do not accept unaccompanied minors. I’ve actually tried to get hotel rooms for my 17 year old children, the hotel wouldn’t let them check in. Even if I prepaid everything. Even if the kid lies and says they are 18 (international hotels always require passports). It cannot be done.

I think OP is a troll honestly because the premise is absurd. It’s literally not possible for an 18 year old to check into a hotel alone.

Are their contacts adults living there and part of the community? Family?
Then yes

My first question is this. It don’t speak the language, I don’t even get to any other questions.

That’s ridiculous. You only travel to countries where you know the language? How limiting.

Idk is really not a bad idea to be able to communicate with people...i speak English, French, Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic and have gotten all around the world speaking those languages

Fwiw, i got around Vietnam speaking French, Mandarin and English

Ugh. I mean a not yet 18 year old.

I feel like 17 (still legally a minor) is too young for international travel that is not part of an organized and supervised trip.

There are hostels. Here’s the age requirement for one in Hoi An:

“Age Restriction: The minimum age to check in alone is from 11 years old.”

The age of majority in Vietnam is 16.
Hotels will allow kids as young as 13 to check in.

Most people on this thread have never traveled in Vietnam, or probably anywhere in SEA.

This is absolutely false.
