My k-8 bombed

I really don't know what you're talking about. My child was an 8th grader at Norwood last year and they had a very good year. Multiple matriculations at all of the Big 3 (including GDS, which was very difficult last year), Holton, Georgetown Prep, Potomac, and Maret.

Let's be clear to everyone not in the know. There were 2 GDS admits last year of which both were admitted in spite of Langley. They excelled elsewhere. There were no Sidwell's. The Potomac admits were 1) admitted to GDS and attended GDS 2) sibling 3) unclear hook or no hook.

80%+ did not get into their first choice.

Again, I really don't know what you're talking about so yes, let's be clear to everyone not in the know. There are 3 at Sidwell from last year's Norwood class- feel free to check the website that you are citing. re: GDS, what does "in spite of Langley mean"? I'm not sure what your point about being admitted to both Potomac and GDS and choosing GDS means. Most kids are accepted at multiple schools and all of them only chose one to attend. But there are still multiple kids attending Potomac from last year's Norwood class.

It is 100% not true that 80% didn't get into their first choice. I can think of more than 20% off the top of my head that got into their first choice and that doesn't include the kids who matriculated at Bullis and St. Andrews, which were many kids first choice given their location and/or interests.

This is true for some and not true for some. You have to know what you are trying to get out of it and what your kid is like. It's not a black or white thing.

Read the book “Middle School Matters” or any other number of research articles—actually the research is pretty clear because there is brain maturity that happens in the middle years middle (10-14). Nothing is true of every kid, of course, but by and large investing in the foundational years if you have to choose is best

The author of "Middle School Matters" was Sheridan's (K-8) school counselor until last year.

Yes, I wish we had done it this way but we believed in the stories about our “good local public” so we got on the private school bandwagon in late elementary, too late, really.

Current Norwood LS parent here with multiple friends in last year and this year's 8th grade. They report that most of the admitted students to Sidwell / Maret / Potomac/ STA were students that were siblings, recruited athletes, big money/legacy and met other institutional priorities. This year, many kids did not get their top 3 or 4 choices and are hoping for waitlist movement. Many are not happy. There are a lot of Norwood boosters on DCUM so I am sure they will say otherwise. Probably the best way to find out if you are considering the school you should ask the administration about their outplacement results for kids that are not in those categories.

Seems quite strong. What does bold vs not bold mean?
Anonymous
Bold prob means they matriculated there: in bold is likely accepted but no one went.

Except the list says matriculation, not acceptances, so I assume the whole list is where students actually went.

Current Langley parent here of a younger child and this has me worried. Have results really been bad recently? We hear very little in the lower school about outplacement.

I am a LS parent but am close with a mom of an 8th grade grad from last year who said the results were good. Don’t have insight on this year though.

I'm also a LS parent and the "results were good" last year refers to the two kids that were basically the same kids that got into the top schools (multiple admits). So what about everyone else? I'm honestly a bit worried the direction things are trending and so are other parents here

Langley mom here. Most middle school parents know that last year’s graduates were a unique class… small, behavioral challenges and Covid wasn’t kind to them to boot. This year’s 8th grade did very well. It’s a great group of kids.

Langley graduate mom here w current 9th grader. 3 kids went to GDS, 2 to Holton, several to Landon, a few to Gonzaga, Maret, several turned down SSAES many to Bullis and FH this year. The grade did fine and what behavioral challenges are you referring too? Yes the grade was small but behavioral challenges? Let’s not mention alto of nonsense that happened in this years graduating class. Regardless I’m sure this class did very well

Not to derail the thread, but I’m also a mom of a Langley graduate and I heard *not good things* about this class. My child’s class had good HS results. Holton, GDS, Burke, Field, NCS, Madeira, Landon, Bullis, Georgetown Prep, Stone Ridge, boarding schools.

Clearly PR.

different norwood parent here - agree that if you are considering norwood for your child and you are concerned about 9th grade admissions and want big3/big5 high school and you are not in the categories outlined above (sibling of current child, big money/legacy, recruited athlete or other "hook") then you should ask the administration so they can break down the statistics for you. if Potomac/Sidwell/STA/Maret are not a priority for you then it should be fine.

Forgot about one or two to Potomac and St. Albans.

You don’t get into Sidwell and go to Spencerville Adventist Academy. Very few to Sidwell, GDS, NCS and STA. Most went to Bullis or St Andrews, with a few others for good measure. Not even a large group to HA or Landon, which are just down the street. If you are a Norwood parent paying high tuition this NOT the list you want.

Exactly. So why are other K-8 held to a different standard?
