That’s the mascot, not the nickname of the school.
Not according to Virginia Tech

Hokie is the nickname and HokieBird is the masoc
You are confused. People don’t say, “I attend Hokie.” They might say, “I am a Hokie - I go to VA Tech.”
Did you not click on the link? "Hokie" is NOT the mascot. The school literally tells you their nickname is Hokie and their mascot is a HokieBird.
Yes, I read your link and you are mistaken if you think anyone is referring to VT (the school) as “Hokie.” No one “goes to Hokie.” But I encourage you to try it out and see what kind of reactions you get!
You said the Hokie was the mascot. That is factually incorrect as evidenced by the link from the source identifying the name of the mascot as the "HokieBird."
Feel free to take it up with the school if you think it named the mascot incorrectly and in contradiction of your sincerely-held belief.
OMG. And YOU said “Hokie is the nickname.” You were wrong. Please move on.
Actually, the UNIVERSITY says "Hokie" is the nickname in the link provided earlier, although the response was to your fairly rude (and, as it turns out, incorrect) assertion that Hokie is the mascot and not the nickname, when the mascot is actually the "HokieBird."
This is all pretty pedantic, but if you weren't so defensive, rude, and condescending in response to someone saying they didn't like Hokie, asserting that it was somehow out of bounds for this conversation because, as you incorrectly asserted, it was the mascot not a nickname, I wouldn't have brought it up. The VT page saying exactly the opposite made it easy pickings to stand up for the PP. You apparently have it in your mind that there is a certain definition of nickname that is different than how the PP (and other PPs in this thread) have used it, but I suspect what you are really upset about is (1) someone disparaging the Hokie name, and/or (2) someone correcting you (which is why you keep trying to insist I am wrong and you are right without acknowledging that the VT link uses the words that you insist don't apply to the term Hokie).
Bottom line, it's OK if someone doesn't like the Hokie nickname. I wouldn't say it's annoying myself, but it is a pretty odd word. It's not an attack on the university. No need to be defensive.
