Interesting. I lived and worked there for a couple of years and didn't find it to be all that. What did you do and see there that was so good?

I'm intrigued too as I lived there for two years and found it a terribly dreary and dull country with none of the energy or activities of the UAE or scenery of Oman. Both Doha and the overall country would have to rank highly on the list of the ugliest places in the world.

Geology does not include the study of countries or political boundaries.

I loved Cambodia more that I expected and wish I had budgeted more time there (it was a 4 day side trip from Thailand).

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala was fabulous, but every backpacker visiting Central America has been there and will say the same.

How can you say Turkey is "underrated"? It is the 6th most visited country in the WORLD!

1. France - 90.0 million
2. Spain - 83.7 million
3. United States - 79.3 million
4. China - 65.7 million
5. Italy - 64.5 million
6. Turkey - 51.2 million

Not by Americans.

I love Istanbul with my whole heart and would love love love to go back. I agree it’s underrated but I don’t want it to become more on the radar to Americans.

Istanbul is one of the top ten most visited cities in the world. Hardly what I would consider "under-rated"

I think you should devote 6-7 more posts to quibbling about the definition of underrated.

Then we can move on and address the critical issue of whether underrated should be hyphenated.

French food. 45 minutes from a major airport. 90 minutes from the heart of the French Alps. And yet I have met very few Americans or even Brits who have ever heard of it.

Went over 20 years ago on a People to People trip and LOVED it!

I’ll say that I don’t know that Istanbul/Turkey is over or underrated, but it’s an absolutely amazing place to go.

I’ll add Granada, Spain. Not unknown to tourists, given the Alhambra and Generalife (which are some of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been), but the town overall—the streets, parks, river walk—is lovely. Around every corner there’s a fabulous church, or plaza, or architecture. For whatever reason, it is less popular than Seville, and Cordoba. But it deserves a visit.

Bosnia, Mostar. Fascinating, and plenty of "pretty" tourist sites among the areas being rebuilt from the war.

Brittany, France. I basically don't like Paris, Nice, any of the popular cities (or most of France), but the coastline was so so stunning.

Vienna! Why is this not a hot place? The old city is *huge* and there is just architecture, and cobblestones, and opera, and great Bier everywhere you go. Top-3 city, and as an ex-pat kid, I've lived in many!

Australia, Mornington Peninsula, Great Ocean Road. Basically the under-traveled areas around Melbourne. So calm & beautiful. Syndey overrated.

IDK.. I don't think I like the idea of spending my money in a country where women are second class citizens. Just doesn't feel right to me.

that sentiment applies to about half of the US as well since the dreadful SC decision last year

Do you include almost all European countries that have significantly more restrictive abortion policies?

I’ll add Hyderabad India to the list. Spent a week there and found it fascinating. The food was really good and the old architecture was cool. And the people were kind.
I’ll also add Vancouver. Beautiful city!

PP have you been? If you had been you
Might realize that Istanbul is full of tourists, and the ruins of Ephesus, plus a few resort areas full of sunburned Brits. It if you go anywhere outside of those areas it’s a different story. How about Kas or Dalyan, Turkey are underrated? Is that better? I think cappadocia is pretty discovered now too.
