Public Vs. private

Because I don't want my kid to be locked down every week. I want them to learn and be in an environment where their are real consequences for doing something wrong, none of this "Restorative Justice " BS.

NP - currently have kids in private HS (not "Big 3") and magnet public HS - both kids went to private MS. So far very impressed with public - the teachers and curriculum are overall better. Private has been meh and I mostly regret that money spent. At DC's private there is definitely a class where they are teaching to the level of the least knowledgeable student.

Small classes, responsive administration, not having to deal with discipline issues and lockdowns, and curriculum flexibility. College counselors and teachers who really know my kid, real college preparedness vs emphasis on the AP arms race and inflated GPAs, and opportunities to play their sport of choice. We sent our kids to public for elementary and were disappointed with the overcrowding, constant disruptions in the classroom (DD had a kid one year who routinely threw chairs/objects and they had to “lockdown” the classroom), teaching to the lowest common denominator, maddening school calendars with random days off and half days/snow days for rain, and a transient and disengaged community. Yes there were some great teachers in the mix, but so often they had their hands tied because of mcps policies and curriculum. We’d moved to MD to send our kids to one of the “top” school clusters and were wildly unimpressed so we made some lifestyle changes that allow us to send our kids to private and we’ve never looked back.

All privates and all public schools are not alike and there are pros and cons at each but overall the private school environment is one that makes the best sense for our family.

MoCo has taken DEIA to such extremes, they not only eliminated special resource officers entirely, they also virtually eliminated suspensions and expulsions of even the most danger criminal offenders and gang members.

Criminal students must be “Included” too, and provided “Access.”

It’s not unusual for your child to be sitting at lunch next to the convicted drug dealer, the gang-banger who brings a weapon/gun to school sometimes, the rapist. Those kids are skipping g class regularly, but when they do bother to show up, they will disrupt your child’s education.

And MoCo won’t agree to change anything. Private schools are rapidly becoming your best option in MoCo.

+1

DEIA = racism.

The parents (the ones in high places) know each other, which in turn helps the kids get the internships and make the connections they need. Sure you make connections in college, but it’s not the same as the community that’s made over many years in elementary/middle/high. Success has never just been about merit. Don’t kid yourself.

Of course it has. That’s when you know it’s real talent.

OMG, it totally has. But maybe you mean a different kind of success, such as owning a nine-bedroom house in Spring Valley.
But that is NOT the success we are gaming for. We value science and art and innovation such as Madam Currie, Dr. Katalin Kariko.
not some social climbing with country club. That is so boring.

Actually want to respond to this:

It is sad to live in a country that define success as social climbing. Success would be achieved by achieving what one values the most through one's own effort.
