Well, I guess that is your fault for living in the snobby Whitman district.

My kids go to Einstein and kids that are ecstatic if they go to UMD. It's the top choice since it is the affordable in state flagship.

I agree the sweatshirt tradition is obnoxious.

No one is making snarky comments at Whitman or any other local school about attending UMD. It’s a great school and harder to get into every year.

You have no clue about the snarky comments.

The snobbishness of Whitman is way overstated on this board. Most families of teenagers in the neighborhood bought their homes in the late 90s or early 2000s when prices were a lot more reasonable. Parents tend to be duel income working professionals and thus fall in the donut hole. On average they have two kids. Private university tuition and board is roughly $80,000 a year and will only rise. So if there is a younger sibling that's roughly $700,000 in costs. No financial aid. Never mind grad or medical school. That's a lot of money even for the majority of Whitman families. And Maryland is a good school, particularly in CS and engineering. And if a kid intends to go to law or medical school it makes even more sense. No one at Whitman except the super-snoots looks down on anyone going to Maryland. In my experience, they tend to be good, thoughtful kids who understand that choices sometimes need to be made.

If you own a $2M house you are rich.

My child goes to UMBC. The interns would reminisce with alums of their school at work & my DC was totally left out of that. They survived.

Yes, this is something people need to learn in life. However, think of how much worse it would have been for your kid if the place that hosted the internships had hosted an "Alumni Day" and told all the employees and interns to wear sweatshirts from their alma maters, knowing that a significant portion of the employees attended the same expensive, selective college and some students attended schools like UMBC that are obviously great schools but that can be looked down upon at times.

All kids have to learn to navigate these sorts of interactions, but that doesn't mean the schools should unnecessarily create the situation. It will happen on its own. Let it. The school (or PTA) doesn't need to help it along.

There is absolutely nothing stopping an excited or proud senior from wearing swag from their chosen college to school, announcing it on their Instagram, or just talking about their plans. Many absolutely will. But no reason to make it an official event.

Dumb place sent out a notification for kids to wear their college sweatshirt to school on May 1st.

What is this? So kids can brag more about the swanky, expensive colleges they got into and make others feel badly who were waitlisted or had to take second choice? Yuck. I know I know - we bought here thinking it was a "good" School.. NO! A school of pushy, rude parents who only look out for number one. Themselves and their kids. It's awful.

What about a kid who may have to go to Montgomery College? What if someone isn't going to college? What if someone comes from low income housing and cannot afford college? What if What if What if?? Not bad in and of itself but geez. My kid is likely going to UMD and has already received a number of snarky comments. On waitlist that won't get off of while kid x, y, z parades in and out with a Michigan sweatshirt daily.

Why does this idiot school allow this? What is wrong with these people? Isn't the instagram they are exposed to daily bad enough???

Stop the madness. It's cruel to some of these kids who are not thrilled with college decision.

This is a good opportunity to teach your kid how to deal with envy and disappointment. Not everyone gets a medal.

I think what you really mean is "It's cruel to parents like me who bragged about how bright my child was and how gifted they were and now my kid is going to regular state college where *gasp* some normal kids with normal IQs go. "

Nobody would get it, except maybe a couple of boomer teachers.

Actually it's not a lot of money if you can afford that area. You choose to spend the money on an expensive house and lifestyle and are now screaming poverty. You aren't donut hole families. Be real.

Having spent some time on the Instagram pages for college matriculations from the W schools, I wouldn’t be too worried about this. Will be lots of UMBC, Maryland, GW, etc. schools that were once considered safety schools for the Ws.

Eh, I know a lot of families that couldn’t afford private but can live in Whitman. There are still a range of houses, many just under one million

Although that was in theaters maybe 45 years ago, it was a staple of most college campuses for decades.

But they do now. Everyone has been getting a medal since the mid-90s.

Again, you could have bought a much cheaper house and used the extra money for college. Even a million is a lot of money. Our house was 1/3 the cost so we could save for college.

Ooh. I have to get a George Washington University t-shirt for my son. That way people like you can look down on him for going to what DCUM calls the "rich international losers' school". Never mind that we are, in fact, dual citizens, that George Washington is exactly the same price as Georgetown and other privates, and that there are way more international kids at NYU and elsewhere than at George Washington. Also, he got in with a generous scholarship.

But none of this can be added to the t-shirt, so you can just keep making stupid assumptions! I feel you're the type that loves to be outraged
Holy defensiveness! Someone isn’t comfortable about where their kid is going to college…
Perhaps, but this practice is in bad taste.
No it’s not. There’s no reason kids can’t be proud of where they are going to college.

There's no reason kids can't be proud of where they are going to college without having a school-sponsored event where they're supposed to wear a shirt with the name of the college on it. Unless they're doing it for external validation, of course.

🤷🏻‍♀️Whelp guess you’ll just have to suck it up since this event is happening.

For AI/ML it's often in the T10 even, but that's probably lost on W parents. Anyway, I doubt Sergey Brin or Tim Sweeney regretted going there.

Even if I got into Harvard I wouldn't bother with this nonsense nor should you.
