Your kid is getting snarky comments for going to UMD?? Well, I guess that is your fault for living in the snobby Whitman district. My kids go to Einstein and kids that are ecstatic if they go to UMD. It's the top choice since it is the affordable in state flagship. I agree the sweatshirt tradition is obnoxious.
No one is making snarky comments at Whitman or any other local school about attending UMD. It’s a great school and harder to get into every year.
You have no clue about the snarky comments.
The snobbishness of Whitman is way overstated on this board. Most families of teenagers in the neighborhood bought their homes in the late 90s or early 2000s when prices were a lot more reasonable. Parents tend to be duel income working professionals and thus fall in the donut hole. On average they have two kids. Private university tuition and board is roughly $80,000 a year and will only rise. So if there is a younger sibling that's roughly $700,000 in costs. No financial aid. Never mind grad or medical school. That's a lot of money even for the majority of Whitman families. And Maryland is a good school, particularly in CS and engineering. And if a kid intends to go to law or medical school it makes even more sense. No one at Whitman except the super-snoots looks down on anyone going to Maryland. In my experience, they tend to be good, thoughtful kids who understand that choices sometimes need to be made.
Actually it's not a lot of money if you can afford that area. You choose to spend the money on an expensive house and lifestyle and are now screaming poverty. You aren't donut hole families. Be real.
Eh, I know a lot of families that couldn’t afford private but can live in Whitman. There are still a range of houses, many just under one million
Again, you could have bought a much cheaper house and used the extra money for college. Even a million is a lot of money. Our house was 1/3 the cost so we could save for college.
