I only learned this from reading Matthew Perry's book. Matthew, it turns out, was the son of an actor. HIs dad was not as successful as Matthew was.

Is this really a thing people didn't know?

I have no idea who Bianca Lawson is, but I'm always surprised when people mention Maya Rudolph. I get that her mom had a famous song, but she was hardly a household name and she died in 1979. I don't know how you get to nepo baby in TV and movies from that.

Because her dad was the power player. The same google that told you about her mom will tell you about her dad, too.

I just learned last week that Tracee Ellis Ross from Blackish and Girlfriends is Diana Ross's daughter.

Yep and her father was a manager (music industry) so had connections as well.

Her half brother is Evan Ross (ATL, Hunger games).

Also married to Ashley Simpson, sister of Jessica Simpson. And their older sister is Berry Gordy's daughter.

I think there are also two levels of nepo babies. The first is just having connections in the industry that give you a leg up on how it works, who to talk to, how to break into the industry. It’s sort of the equivalent of being full pay and having your parents hire great college consultants. You still need great stats to get into good schools, but you know how to navigate what can seem like a black box to those on the outside. I wouldn’t say those got in on nepotism, but that they have opportunities/insight that aren’t available to most that give them an enormous advantage.

The second is getting an audition or even a role based on your parents. For that, I think your parents need to either be a very big deal or close with someone influential on a particular project.

I think there’s less distinction between these groups than you think. I think it’s a lot like DC, in that there are the famous political figures that everyone knows, and then there are the important behind the scenes people who actually make everything work, and in the “industry,” everyone who matters knows who they are. Their kids have a leg up as much as the kids of the famous people. Maybe more, since they aren’t as obviously Nepo babies and can fly under the radar a bit more. A friend of mine on the Hill used to refer to them all as “celebrity children,” but no one who wasn’t in the business would know who their parents were.

I did not know that Stellan Skarsgard was vampire Eric’s father. Nor did I know that Floki and Vampire Eric were brothers. They look nothing alike. I guess I should have figured it out by their last names, but whatever.

Another way to look at this as far as nepo babies, is that, they also don't have a lot of other options for careers.

They live in Hollywood. That is the industry where a lot of people work, and there are a lot of jobs.

They may have very narcissism tendencies, seeking validation from their physical appearance.

If they have above average looks, some people might not take them very seriously in other occupations, no matter how hard they try.

I remember what it was like being my older sister's little sister when I started freshmen year of high school. The other students and the teachers already knew me, even though they didn't know me, they just knew my sister.
