More Chaos at ACHS

It is so unbeleivably insane that the Landmark Mall redevelopment didn't include a second HS that I seriously wonder if it was and just hasn't been announced yet.

It's in the absolute perfect location in terms of population and transit that it is simply inconceivable that one wasnt planned for.

Yeah they also could have negotiated a school on Potomac yards as well, but as others have said city council is more interested in selling all the land to developers. It's mint boggling that they have have pledgedcto build 3,000 affordable housing units yet city council has pledged no new schools or rec centers to keep up with the huge amount of new residents that are going to move into these homes.

Does anyone know the increase of school population with the open southern border and the sanctuary city status. I know our ES has seen a 10% increase just this year. The budget only projects a 1-2% increase. Why doesn’t one single school board member talk about the unsustainable enrollment increases?

Agreed. They won't build another high school until / unless the current submission to equity is abandoned in favor of common sense.

Agreed—this was a huge missed opportunity. It was a great location. Large site. Doesn’t serve the affordable housing platform.

Alexandria government doesn't even plan for a second high school because they believe a second high school would be inequitable. So no, there wasn't anyone even at the Landmark table pitching a new HS.

Alexandria government doesn't even plan for a second high school because they believe a second high school would be inequitable. So no, there wasn't anyone even at the Landmark table pitching a new HS.

They could draw boundaries to make any new school equitable. ACHS isn’t exactly pedestrian friendly anyways on busy King Street. So bussing of students would happen under any boundary scenario.

It's never going to happen in our lifetime. NEVER. People need to accept it and stop twisting themselves into knots speculating what ifs. I wish they would have at least 3 high schools and having one at Landmark would have been very convenient for the west end population. But who cares, because this is absolutely the hill everyone who has the ability to make this decision (whether it is the school board or city council or city manager or whomever) will die on. They're not going to do it. No matter how many options, complaints, etc. NEVER. It is just mind blowing.

Sad but very very true. It will never happen. The city is in crisis in any number or ways due to leadership. But all the same people will be elected again.

Even if they decided now they would go forward with a 2nd high school, for perspective, for them to come to the point where they even were making a decision on not having a 2nd high school took them over a decade.

ACPS and the city isn't interested in solutions. Their end game is complete chaos. GW, Minnie Howard and the High School are there. My bet is not a single parent or citizen shows up at the school board meeting on Thursday. Why wouldn't ACPS continue down this path. They have a mandate.
