It’s not excessive occupancy if you are bringing the number of people that the property states it can house. And at least hotels state their pet upfront. It’s not a surprise addition after I’ve made the request to book based on the total nightly rate listed on the booking. |

Last spring break, I brought my family to an AirBNB in France. The owner didn't give me info on how to get in until way too late and I was stuck across from the AirBNB trying to figure out how to unlock the door with two kids, tons of luggage, and no internet signal in a foreign country.
It was such a nightmare that I'm staying in a hotel in London this time. Getting off a red eye and then being stuck in a strange city with no where to put my luggage is just too much. Nope. That said, I will probably stay in AirBNBs again, just not right after getting off a red eye. I will say that with hotels offering so few cleaning services mid-trip the differences between the two options are becoming fewer and fewer. |
Where are these hotels not offering cleaning services? I’ve travelled at ton since Covid (but mostly to FL so maybe that’s why) and we’ve had no issues with hotel housekeeping. The only trip it wasn’t offered was our first trip spring break of 2021 and even then we receive a restock of anything we wanted just by texting the front desk. Every trip since then (at least 4-5 more) were full daily housekeeping. |
Florida was over with Covid restrictions/limitations after 4 months. Most hotels in big cities were not. Hell, the Hyatt Regency I stayed at in New Jersey last weekend is still requiring masks be worn in elevators and no more than 4 people ride at a time. Ridiculous |
I was just in New Orleans at a top hotel and they didn't provide cleaning during your stay, just before and after. We were there for 5 nights, so it would have been nice to get fresh stuff and the trash taken out. At least they didn't charge me $180 for cleaning like all the dumb air BnBs |
I stayed in several different hotels in Michigan last summer and none offered cleaning because of “staff shortages.” All had a pet fee. DCUM is full of Air BNB haters but we use it often. I make sure to contact the owner before to get all the policies and fees before booking. I wonder if DCUM haters just aren’t doing their due diligence. |
I love this comment: I’m reading this thread from a Marriott right now. Tomorrow I get to walk out the door without scrubbing the floors and reroofing the house or whatever the hell. |
I once stayed in a unit where they had a posted price list for missing items. It was like: $5/washcloth, $8/hand towel, $12/bath towel, $8/plate and so on and so on. I was like HOLY $HIT! I also don't like having to report everything that's broken or in poor repair for fear of being charged for it. And why don't the cleaners report the obvious issues to the owners? If a shower doesn't drain or a sliding door doesn't operate, the cleaner should have noticed that and reported it. Same with burned out light bulbs or non flusing toilets. |

Yes and youre essentially a nuisance to the Airbnb host. Theyre entrepreneurs, living their lives, doing whatever, and when you message them in the middle of the day, they really dont want to hear from you, and you can tell, even if they try to act friendly about it. The hotel hosts have nothing else to do and arent in the middle of doing laundry/picking up their kids from school/working another job/getting groceries, and are used to fielding requests from other guests, and are happy to help and used to doing it. You feel so much more welcome. |
I stay at Hampton Inns regularly. They've had routine daily cleaning for at least the last 12 months. You can request not to have daily maid service. Otherwise you get daily maid service. They'll change your sheets daily if you want. |
Average hotels have been providing daily service for many months. You stayed at a dud. |
Typically hotel cleaners are significantly better trained than airbnb cleaners. |
+1 on Hampton Inns. At Holiday Inn Express we did have to affirmatively say we wanted daily housekeeping but we did and there was no issue there either. |

During Covid many hotels got rid of daily cleaning due to health reasons. Now, they have kept it as people got used to it and it reduces expenses for the hotel owners (less ppl needing to be staffed). Having said that, almost everywhere will clean daily if you ask.
Airbnb has gone so downhill once a bunch of people turned into str landlords. |
