Yes, I was in LAW SCHOOL in 1997. Seatbelts were absolutely the norm 100% of the time for anyone with half a brain. Not necessarily in a cab in a city (in part because the cab seatbelts were kind of dirty), but NYC did have a major "buckle up in cabs" campaign in the mid-90's, because they put in plexiglass dividers in order to protect the cab drivers, which then led to a ton of people smashing their noses against plexiglass dividers when the cabbies hit the brakes to avoid hitting a rollerblader. |
| In US depends on your state when it became law.most starte in 1980’s through late 1990’s. Georgia 2021! |
Diana killed herself by not fastening her seat belt. The only person who survived was a body guard who did fasten his seat belt . Her death was investigated by the France and Britain not to mention all the other idiots who said the "Omnipotus They" killed her because she was pregnant with Didi's child! Let this poor woman rest in peace!!!!! |

Diana didn’t wear her seatbelt, if she had she wouldn’t have suffered her fatal injury which was caused by shearing inside from being unrestrained in the vehicle. Her bodyguard, who was the only one wearing a belt, survived.
It was a tragic death caused by a drunk driver and a foolish decision not to buckle up. The royal family’s hand was in it insofar as they failed to insist she continue to have a detail provided by the UK security service. |
The bodyguard who was wearing his seat belt did survive. |
He bought an engagement ring. |
This. Cabs and rideshares, too. |
Nope, not in the backseat. I was in my 30s back then and wouldn’t have worn my seatbelt in the backseat. |
Fair point. |
+1 and seatbelts we're definitely the norm for regular driving but a ton of ppl weren't using them in the backseat of cabs etc. |
Also a New Yorker. I was in elementary school in the 90s, but I also recall that seat belts were not a huge thing in taxis at the time, for years after, and to a lesser degree, still today. Definitely odd because we wore seatbelt in our own cars. |
According to his crazy dad. Diana’s friends who she spoke to from that fateful vacation insist she was not in love with Dodi and still pinned for Hasnat. |
Then you were just stupid. I was 19 in 1997 and had been wearing a seatbelt in the back for at least a decade, maybe more. To be fair, I remember not wearing in the early 80s, but by the early 90s, everyone I knew wore a seatbelt no matter where they sat in the car. |
| I can remember being inHS in the 80s and if we squeezed extra people in the back seat, the two skinniest (or the ones dating) would share a seatbelt. Even as crazy teens driving around with four kids in the backseat of a car, we were all belted! |
My kid was born in 1996. We couldn't leave the hospital without a carseat. Everyone was seat belted in. |
