People are so confused about average heights. 5’6 F and 6’0 male are in no way “average-ish.” The average female height is 5’4 and average male height 5’9. 6’0 is like the 85 percentile. |
| I am short, both parents short, all siblings short. However, when I fell off the growth chart Ped referred us to Endo, and testing revealed I was just destined to be short. Fast forward 30 years and my sister, married to a tall husband, had a son whose growth also fell off chart. Went to an Endo and found out he has a heritable genetic mutation of his pituitary gland, likely from my father’s side of the family (father is only 5’ 1”). So, it doesn’t hurt to check. I am just short, like my mom and siblings. But my nephew had an issue that is treatable, so instead of being 5’1” like his grandfather, he might be 5’6”-5’8” like his uncles. |

Hey, I'm the OP! Just stumbled on this on here again.
We took him to an endocrinologist and I'm glad we did - turns out he was actually in the 5th percentile (not 2nd; he wasn't being measured correctly at the ped) and she has no concerns and does not recommend growth hormone, which is great. Now I don't worry about it as much - he's likely to be short, but as long as he's healthy, that's ok with me. I do think it was worth checking out rather than wondering though. |
+1 At 8, the online calculators are totally unreliable. Even a few years later, it's a guess, not a guarantee. You answered your own question when you told us his dad's height. DS was predicted to be 6'5" when he was 14. He's 18 now and he's 6'1". He hasn't added an inch in two years. Doctors aren't psychics and their guesses don't come with guarantees. |
Totally agree. My nephew was always predicted to be around 6’4, he was always like the 99 percentile throughout childhood. Tall parents. He hit puberty early and never grew after age 14. He is 5’11 now at 22 years old. His dad is 6’4 and mom is tall too, around 5’9. You really just never know. |
| When is it too late to start growth hormones? |
Somebody lying about the daddy |
Not really this is pretty much what one would expect from this pairing |
People just don't know their real height so many claim to be much taller than they are. Even the medical assistants at the doctor's office can get it wrong. I'd bet op is about 5'2' and her husband 5' 6' so her son reaching 6'4" makes since |
Fake news |
| The school i teach at has a lot of Hispanic and Asian kids. 5'4" is quite normal for the boys. It is the direction of the males in our country. |
| My mom is 5'1 and my dad is 5'7. My brother got to 5'10 miraculously. (Sister and I same as mom.) You never know. |
?? No, this is true. It happens sometimes, just like short parents sometimes have a kid who is 6’3. Sorry you don’t like it. |
This is part of why health insurance is so expensive. No indication at all there is anything wrong with the kid but yes, go to an expensive specialist and run a bunch of expensive tests, just to see. |
NP here. Yes, this is my cousin too. My aunt and uncle are short (probably 5’4” and 5’8”, respectively) and my cousin is 6’5”. |
