Gee, I can't imagine how presenting this information to young children could backfire in any way.

The next two steps in this guy's program are (and this was in the kids version

Phase 2:
Throat Punching Racism In Schools and/or Curb
Stomping Racism In The Workplace: You can take both
courses, but only one is required to move to Phase 3.
NOTE: These courses will be available in August 2020.

Phase 3:
Choking Out Systemic Racism: This will be available in
September 2020.

..."Throat punching"? "Curb stomping"? "Choking out"? Like, these are kindergarten-appropriate?

I teach my kids about racism but that is definitely not the way I would condone doing it. I'm not trying to teach violence as a method of dealing with things wrong with society.

This program preaches violence to school children - in a public school your taxes pay for.

Go ahead and try to make an adult, nuanced deflection to somehow twist this violent rhetoric into something virtuous. Then scrap it; because you can’t put enough lipstick on this disgusting indoctrination.

The violent terms here were preached to very young children. No wonder OP’s child came home traumatized.

This whole “indoctrination” was a vile perversion of a once noble idea.

Janney should apologize and atone for it by sucking with teachings directly from Dr. Martin Luther King.

You might want to take a deep breath. Nothing on this thread indicates violence was preached. Should we also no longer “fight” poverty or “kick” cancer

Have you taught your three-year-old to "throat punch" cancer? Why not? To "curb stomp" homelessness?

Have you explained to your three-year-old what "curb stomping" even is? Would you? In what context?

Yeah, that's truly disingenuous on your part. The kids are asked to think of combating racism in purely violent terms. "Fist Book", "fight club", "throat punching", "choking out", "curb stomping"....

Sorry you are so scared

you aren't a parent, I take it.

No kidding. And people wonder why there is backlash against this stuff. Are any Janney parents communicating their misgivings to the principal, or is that too risky?

IS ANYONE ELSE CONCERNED THAT THEY MAY HAVE TO REFLECT ON THEIR OWN BELIEFS OR CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOR BECAUSE THEIR CHILDREN WILL CALL THEM OUT

So when you taught your three-year-old about curb stomping racists, perhaps their own family members, how did you go about it?

Wait, you didn't.

I’m not an expert in anti racist education. I wish my kid was at Janney to have this opportunity to learn about a really important topic.

My child is in an older grade so did not attend. But I just clicked on the fist book link in the newsletter and it is pretty horrifying, with violent language and asking children to identify racist family members. There are better ways to teach these lessons.

I also think it is a mistake to encourage kids to think of their “colorblind” family members as racist. These people may be misguided in how to think about race, based on current research, but I do not think it is fair encourage kids to label these people as racist. That is a very strong word.

As just a personal example when my kids talk about race with older family members they do so in a thoughtful way that impresses their elders and might even change minds and hearts to some degree. If they were to approach these same relatives with this aggressive and combative language it would be perceived much differently.

This. If you’re not a bit racist, you’re not bothered by this.

It sounds like this session provides a great opportunity for you to have a really important conversation with your child

DCPS is certainly doing their job. My white child has mentioned more than once that she wishes she were Black. This is a good jumping off point for more conversations, but imagine the reverse. WTF.

PP here with the "a little girl was taken away from her but now we have a Black president" K-er. I'm absolutely bothered by this given her complete lack of a grasp on anything she was just taught. She doesn't know what racism is. I'm all for lessons on racism within the context of history or current events, but to ask her to abstractly identify it within her own family is an intellectual stretch for a five year old, and one she would almost certainly screw up while trying to impress her teacher.

Defending the problematic aspects of this presentation (the violent language geared towards tiny children, perhaps a lynching depiction) is just going to make people not want to have their kids do these types of assemblies. It's exactly what the Republicans want. Good job, lefties!

We should totally engage in the same behavior, to show the 4 Rs that live in DC!
