Huy Fong Sriracha is not overrated

Anonymous
I love how Sriracha was 'discovered' about a decade or so ago when its popularity ran wild and it was found almost everywhere and in every food. Of course the predictable happened where there was an ensuing backlash where people claimed Sriracha is 'overrated'. Most of that probably came from from the need to be contrarian.

This all happened when white people started using and popularizing Sriracha. The same types also started criticizing it once it became too popular. Good Lord, I'm Asian and have been eating Sriracha since as far as I can remember.....from about the 90s or so, and well before white people 'discovered' it. It is not overrated. It has been a staple condiment for tons of Asian foods for forever. The flavor goes so well with so many Asian foods. Yes, I've had authentic Sriracha sauces from Thailand because I've been there many times. The American version from Huy Fong is just better. It is way better balanced in terms of heat and flavor. The CEO of Huy Fong is known for being very hermit like, who takes quality for his product to the extreme. It shows. He also turned down numerous offers from bigger food makers to buy out his brand back when Sriracha was hitting peak popularity, because he was afraid another company would ruin the quality of the product. It just goes to show you how dedicated the man is to making a damn good sauce.

No, Sriracha is not overrated because it got popular after white people discovered it. Before you know it, Cholula sauce, which is popular with white people at the moment, will be labeled as being 'overrated' next because white people have popularized it.

I love sriracha and cholula. I don’t think either is overrated. Where is this backlash happening? Who says it’s overrated?

Many other discussions like that. White people get to determine what's popular and when things get overrated I guess.

I mean who cares what white people think. Soon turmeric will be “overrated” (if it isn’t already) but that won’t stop me from my generations-long habit of putting it in everything.

That Today.com article is almost 10 years old and, as far as I can tell, Huy Fong’s doing just fine. $150 million in sales with zero marketing.

Do you think David Tran would prefer that white people never “discovered” it?

Huy Fong’s revenue has nearly doubled since that first article declared it overrated in 2013. It appears that the biggest threat to their dominance now isn’t stupid Buzzfeed articles written by white people, but a Thai brand of chili sauce.

Andrew Zimmern...pffft. He's a tool.

I've been eating Sriracha since 1989 and absolutely do not care about their opinions on anything Asian. Especially, when it comes to our food!

My two favorite hot sauces. I just wish Cholula wasn’t so expensive. Overrated IMHO is Tabasco. It’s good, but for half the price and same flavor you can get Crystal. That said, you really only need two- Sriracha and Cholula.

Sriracha is good because it's good.

I have never cares for Cholula. Not sure how do describe why I dislike it, but eww.

I don’t eat it because it’s full of nasty preservatives!

You're a racist. You're making this about stirring the pot (no pun intended).

+1. I love Sriracha and Hoisin sauce in my beef pho. Cholula is my favorite with eggs but Tapatio will do. Fresh salsa is the best but many places don’t have it.
