Wait times for Toyotas? Hondas? VWs?

Anonymous
Starting to consider three row SUV (VW Atlas) or minivan (Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna) bc we are having baby #3 this September. I’ve heard some rumors there are long wait times right now to get a new car and that people are paying over MSRP. Is this issue widespread? Any particular experiences with Toyota, Honda, or VW dealerships in the DMV area?

So glad I bought a car last year. This is ridiculous.

The minivans are scarce, but I think you can find a Pilot or CRV at any dealer in the area. Siennas, especially the hybrid, are very hard to come by. The Toyota dealers I recently spoke to seem to be doing way more ridiculous markups than Honda right now.

Sienna is only hybrid now. No other engine.

Not a brand you asked about, but we ordered a Suburu at the end of November and it finally came in last week. So four months for that one. We paid MSRP, no markup.

I wanted to order a 4Runner in a very specific trim level/option package and color, and was told “Nope”. Toyota doesn’t do that anymore. Doesn’t even matter that it would’ve been paid for in full before the first piece of sheet metal got stamped for it, they won’t take orders now.

Goodbye Toyota, hello Jeep. Got a build date for April 21 for a custom order, delivery first week of May.

That is extremely shortsighted. But sure “hello Jeep dealership” because you will be there regularly for repair.

But you will look cool I guess, which seems to be the priority from your car choice. Do you even really off-road to need a body on frame SUV?

Are pilots less popular now? The are a good choice for families, 3rd row is roomier than highlander, and a little more cargo. Good towing capacity.

Pilots are old. They are releasing a new design later this year. That's why you can get them.

Well there is really no debate that if you want a reliable car, Toyota is the way to go.
However, there is also an ethical dilemma that comes into play. Toyota donated to candidates who supported the insurrection.
They've lied about it and also come out and said how elected officials vote will not affect whether or not they donate to them. So if you are a woman or a minority - realize that the money you give to Toyota is being used to support officials who want to keep you in your place!
It's a pretty scary time right now and I think this dirty money is doing a lot of damage.

We love our Toyota but I won't buy another one. I'm sad about it but I have to have some principles.

Just visited Coleman Toyota by Montgomery mall. They told me MSRP plus $2500. No minivans on their lot. It’s insane.

I looked at a Corolla there and was not quoted any mark up. It must be because minivans are in such hot demand (they have a waitlist on the corollas so they are in demand, too).

My salesperson specifically told me it was a $995 markup on the Corolla (the Corolla cross was not included in this - it was 2500 markup). Most everything bigger is $2500 markup.
They have two corollas on a boat to be here around June. Can put a $500 deposit to secure one of them. I was just there last week asking. Of course maybe different salespeople tell you different things, but I was definitely told they are marking up over MSRP.

We are looking to buy a corolla / civic level car this summer. Can somebody explain the process like I'm 5? Do I just email dealers, tell them what features I want and ask what the markup is? If I'm happy with msrp +markup, I put down a deposit and wait? Do dealerships have cars on the lot? I've been looking through auto trader, but, many vehicles listed re marked "in transit".

Thanks. I am a fairly savvy car buyer, but, have not had to buy a car since 2017.

If you have access to a car buying service through a credit union or other source, use it. In our case, it didn’t help us get a better price but allowed to see quickly that we were getting a fair deal - that the mark up we paid would have been the same across the metro area (Honda CRV hybrid).
