Oberlin loses Gibson lawsuit appeal

Oberlin will have to pay out $50mm in damages which, for a college that was already struggling financially, will take quite a toll on its finances.

Isn't Oberlin's endowment almost double Kenyon's? True, this isn't good for Oberlin, but no one thinks of Kenyon or Rhodes as "struggling financially?"

There's a virulently anti-Oberlin poster on this board for whom posts like yours are irrelevant, unfortunately, PP. This person believes Oberlin does not exist beyond this one incident and apparently would like to see the college dismantled, entirely because of this incident and the college's admittedly poor response to it. I don't have a kid at Oberlin and didn't go there myself, but I can see this PP from a mile away, he or she has been here so many times.

By its own account Oberlin has been struggling financially for years. This is definitely a factor we have been taking into account when looking at schools. I want my kids to attend schools that are investing in programs and continuing to attract the best faculty and students, not cutting back. - NP

That said, Forbes gives Oberlin a financial A+.

Good. Maybe this will keep other schools from trying to impose PC on private businesses. BTW Oberlin's insurance carrier will pick up the tab

I don't think Oberlin will suffer financially from this fine. They have a HUGE endowment. The biggest impact will be that it will alter the rain of the types of kids who apply, at least for a few years. The college really mishandled this and let the few, loudest voices control the narrative. That would give me pause about letting my child , who is not especially woke, apply there. But for the right super progressive kid it could be a perfect fit. I think people who would apply to Kenyon, Denison and Oberlin ini the past, may leave Oberlin out.

This is the same issue as Trumpies vs. Dominion Voting Systems.

I think the college handled this poorly and am glad they lost their appeal but it’s a fine institution and lots of kids love it and get a great education there. Time to move on!

Mom of current Oberlin student here. It was amazingly stupid not settle this case before it went to trial, especially given the jury pool in rural Ohio.

I’m guessing the odds of the Ohio Supreme Court taking this case on appeal are very small. Even if they won there I’m sure it would be appeal to SCOTUS.

It’s a good thing Oberlin’s endowment is close to $1 billion.

$31 million dollars OP. And the incident happened 6 years ago. None of the Admin involved are still with the school. Moving on…

Because of something that happened 6 years ago under a whole different Admin. This is just DCUM’s local Oberlin hater.

The award was reduced to $25 milllion.

But Oberlin will have to pay anything above and beyond the coverage limit.

Says who? Michigan and Michigan State just had to pay $500 to $600M settlements for sexual assaults and I believe they both took out bonds to pay it. So if Oberlin does the same, it's not that big of a deal to pay $25M over the next 10 or 20 years.
