For students eligible for Level IV, how is the math pathway structured in FCPS?
Specifically, how is it determined which students take Algebra 1 in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade? Also, what if a student defers attending AAP for a year, remaining in a private school, and then returns to FCPS to attend 4th grade Level IV? Do they remain equally eligible to take Algebrab1 in 6th grade? 7th? Thanks everyone. |

No one really knows the path to Algebra in 6th, a small number of kids do.
Algebra in 7th is eligible for kids who score in the 91rst percentile on the IAAT and pass advanced on the 7th grade SOL (taken in 6th grade by Advanced Math and LIV students). |
So if I am reading it right, Algebra 1 in 7th hinges on doing well on tests in 6th grade + probably overall student achievement, correct? So there is no penalty for sitting out 3rd grade in private? DC will not miss some Integral Step in 3rd grade which would determine their mathematical trajectory in middle school? |
No. Nothing will be missed by sitting out of AAP in Grade 3. |
Thanks so much, so helpful. Hopefully someone shares the 6th grade Algebra 1 pathway. We did it for my older kid in MCPS, but it was a completely different process. |
It depends on the school/principal. Most of them don't do it at all. |
Oh then it is not all that different. Got it. Tnx.

| For my DS Algebra in 6th was dependant on test scores. |
Thank you. How did (s)he qualify to take the test, and which test? |
| Algebra in 6th requires getting 145 + on the quantitative section of the Cogat, and a near perfect Math SOL score. Approximately 30 students each year in the entire county qualify for this. |
In some schools, an additional test is administered to the kids who meet the qualifications listed above. Technically, this doesn't qualify a kid for Algebra in 6th. It instead qualifies them to join the 6th grade AAP math class while still in 5th grade. They still need to meet the IAAT and 7th grade SOL benchmarks to proceed to Algebra I in 6th. |

One of my friend’s kids did Algebra 1 in 6th grade. The process seems pretty ad hoc, in that the school has to recognize the kid’s potential, and get the kid into 6th grade AAP math in 5th grade. This kid (I know her very well) had an overall score of 154 on her CogAT, perfect scores in all her math SOLs, and basically perfect scores on her math tests. At the end of 6th grade AAP math (which she took in 5th grade), she did the IAAT and math SOL. 99th percentile in the former and perfect score in the latter.
I’m not sure if all the schools offer this track, but hers is know to do it. |
