| That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing. Hadn’t seen this. |
| Just wait until Keys Gamarra and Meren see how many Asian kids won awards. Why aren’t there quotas by high school? |
| Lol |
| I wonder if it's equally advertised in all FCPS MS and HS. |
If so, crazy that they could spend months on ends debating TJ admissions, but never getting the word out to high school kids at Centreville, Edison, Falls Church, Justice, Lewis, Madison, Mount Vernon, West Potomac about a regional scholastic writing competition. |
| Just looking at the names..lots of Asian students. |
| I wonder what OPs intent of posting this is. |
With this post and the annual "average SAT by school" post, it seems like the intent is to show that TJ, Langley, and McLean are always leading FCPS. This area is oddly tribal about the high schools. |
It's often an effect of teachers--teachers do the submissions with the students. Same with the Scholastic art awards. The schools that routinely get awards are the ones where there's a teacher on the lookout setting up submissions, reminding students of deadlines, suggesting student's submit work. Students can ask a teacher to submit, but usually it's the other way around. |
+1 Bingo. |
Yes. 100% agree. Some schools have staff passionate about arts and others with other areas of interest. However, the deadlines are publicly advertised and kids need to create agency for themselves to apply and get it done regardless if a teacher shares this info or not. Teachers share this info across the county and students should enter, if interested. |

+1. This is why teachers matter. |
| My DC was interested in TJ. When looking at the center MS school vs the local level MS it was a no brainer. At the center MS (not a big feeder to TJ), info on TJ was front and center. I had a hard time finding anything on TJ (high poverty MS). I think this is the difference. At high poverty schools, there are many other problems that take priority over advanced academics or scholastic competitions like attendance for one. |
