Why are all the county executive candidates so SMARMY

Anonymous
I’m not exactly thrilled with Elrich’s management performance but all the other candidates have peak cringe level of smarm. Blair, Riemer, and Hucker all have this icky fake smooth talk about them that make me want to vomit. Elrich is at least real. I’ll take his being a bumbling curmudgeon over any of the conniving slick politicians anyway. It would also be nice to have a council that were not all developer Yes-Men. Everything they do is all yet another master plan of luxury hi rise condos with ground floor retail. So innovation, much thrive, and wow! /s.

Also, WHY is there not a single woman running? Are we at least going to elect some women onto the council, please? I’m so tired of all the opportunistic white men.

I don't find Blair smarmy, kind of nerdy and awkward.

The rest are full on slimy opportunists.

I agree, I wish a woman were running. A person of color. Anyone outside the historical norm.

I would only describe Hans Riemer as smarmy. Riemer is a liar. Elrich is earnest but can’t get anything done. Hucker is a puppet. Blair seems smart but I don’t understand why he wants this job because he could definitely do better.

Wait -- did I write that first post in my sleep last night? Of the new candidates I dislike Hucker the least. Riemer's entire track record is about cozying up to developers. Blair has nothing in his background to suggest that he can be successful as a politician (that's what the county executive is -- this is not the same as running a business). He has no experience in dealing with complex policy issues in a diverse county with a powerful legislative branch. I'm trying to learn more about Hucker. But, in the end, I'm probably going with Elrich -- the devil you know.

I partially agree. But a CE needs to be able to hire the right people to run the departments. And generally good business people can do that. Elrich micromanages. He thinks he knows more than everyone else, and he doesn't. And it has eroded the quality of service delivery. He does not trust (and often never listens) to his department heads.

No no no no. Look up Hucker and his “fast and furious undercover” assignment where he went undercover (?) to bust open a racing ring (?) in MD and had publicity done around it. I really thought it was something from the Onion. He’s also a cheater. No thanks.

Well, it is Takoma Torch and that is satire, like the Onion. He and Elrich are of the same ilk, though, caring more about loud mufflers and car rallies than everyone getting shot and stabbed.

It’s hard to do worse than Elrich. Terrible on Covid. Terrible on development. I can’t think of any reason someone would vote for them unless they’re a county government employee, and even then it seems like it would be hard to live with yourself after casting that vote.

Reimer is smarmy, but at least he’s interested in actually doing something about housing and development. And he’s shown some ability to stand up to the unions when there’s blatant misbehavior, like we saw with the Covid pay. I’ll probably vote for Blair or Riemer, depending on whoever is leading in the polls. The most important thing is just getting someone other than Elrich.

Oh thank goodness! Someone sent it to me as legitimate.

Nah, you may not like Elrich but you cannot honestly say he was terrible on Covid. He was great on Covid.

More housing is necessary period, not rent control.

Riemer's interested in making sure developers make as much money as possible. Look at his record the past 12 years. When he entered office, we didn't have a housing crisis. Now we do, while developers post record profits. He is never looking out for voters, unless those voters happen to be developers.

Riemer and Hucker are both term-limited as Councilmembers, so they have no choice but to run for CoExec or get a real job.

You’re kidding, right? I honestly can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic. Elrich has been a disaster on Covid.

Elrich is like a left-wing version of Trump, but with a sense of ethics.
