Spring break feels hard

Anonymous
I'm just posting because I am feeling down. We planned a family vacation with another family and it has been tough. We are trying our DC with ADHD/ASD on a new med for his ADHD and, when medicated, it's going pretty well. But in the mornings before it kicks in and in the evening when it wears off, he gets more rigid and it comes off as disrespect. It's challenging with just us but doable. With another family, there's an embarrassment component that makes it feel so much worse. And they have an ADHD/ASD kid that seems like such a sweetheart, inattentive and a little introverted compared to my DC who is a verbally impulsive extrovert but unable to read social cues to see how obnoxious they are coming off.

Just feeling exhausted rather than refreshed on this vacation.

Hugs. I'm curious why you're taking this vacation with another family.

I have a child with hyperactive impulsive ADHD and we have done trips with a similar aged cousin with other issues but also an ADHD diagnosis. There have been trips where my DC was a nightmare at times but also other trips where the cousin really struggled some. I totally understand that it’s normal to feel self conscious if you aren’t used to having people see the more difficult times of day for your family. It’s really eye opening to see a full day of some one else’s life. If your child is clearly different on vs before meds they will definitely understand that. They have probably felt self conscious about aspects of how their child presents at times. You can also set the expectation that you hang out just with your family for the tougher parts of the day. We usually go do like an hour long bedtime in the bedroom because my kid is just wild when they are overtired.

I’m cheering for you!
