my great aunt passed away 15 years ago. we just learned that she had a sizable land sale right before she died and the proceeds in the bank should have gone to next of kin since she she wasn't married.
the next of kin would have been her nephew (my dad), and another nephew who was living in a foreign country at the time. this nephew has reached out to me asking about the distribution since he didnt receive anything. my father passed away years ago, and although I was aware of this happening, i wasn't involved so don't know who got what. Is there a way to find out? I want to see if my great aunt had listed the land sale in her taxes to find out how much she made when she sold her property. No idea where she banked but do know she purchased the property in the early 1900s. this was about 25,000 acres in colorado. just trying to figure out what happed. |
| You might try searching for property records in the county of interest |
She may have had a will... Not sure why you're assuming next of kin would have inherited? Did your dad inherit other stuff from her? Someone obviously dealt with the estate... I'd see if you can find anything with the name of executor on it. |
Also, 1963 is not 15 years ago or anywhere close to it? |
59 years, OP. |

"just trying to figure out what happed."
You may not want to know what happened, OP. I'd tell the nephew you know less than he does and leave it for him to figure out. |
| It’s possible your dad swindled the cousin. Agree you may not want to dig. |
| You are beyond delusional if you think you can recover even one penny from this. |
| Definitely just say you don’t know. |
| "No, sorry, my dad died years ago and I don't know anything about her estate." |
| OMG. Why would you do the work on this? If that uncle of yours cares enough, he should be doing the research. |
where did you read that OP was trying to get money? |
| OP here. I want to find out before he does because if my dad did swindle him, then my uncle may come after me and my family to recover. I want to be able to protect myself. |
I think you need to talk to a lawyer. I don’t think he would benefit from looking into this. I am pretty sure that any issues your uncle had with this state should’ve been resolved or brought up way sooner than now. So I don’t actually think he has a case. But you may want to have a brief consult with a good estate attorney and ask. You might wanna ask in an estate litigator |
Lots of typos. I meant to say I don’t think it benefits you to look into this |
