Trying to pack for a month long trip to Europe. We Will be traveling around without a lot of opportunity to do laundry, therefore I’m looking for clothes that I can wash in the hotel sink and hang to dry. Leggings seem like the perfect solution. Is this terrible? Will I regret this when I’m there? Will I feel the need to run out and buy a pair of jeans? I’m basically trying to pack for a month in a small backpack. Thanks.

What are the specific situations you expect to find yourself in? e.g., Hiking and climbing, eating in cafes, formal dinner, museums, etc.
Trying to advise you without complete specifics seems like an invitation to make suggestions and then have them shot down for reasons previously undisclosed. I do hope have a great time! |
+1 for the PP's advice. Leggings will cut it for a lot of activities but not for a nice dinner out or for touring many churches (a lot of churches in Italy especially have attire requirements). Leggings also may be hot in some parts of Europe and the Europeans don't do as much a/c like we do here in the US because their buildings are older and not as easily adaptable.
OP here. Specific situation is a fast paced one month group tour starting in London, traveling through France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Lots of museums and historic sites. Dinners out, but nothing super fancy. Lots of moving from hotel to hotel. No Airbnbs on this trip. Not a lot of down time. I understand this type of travel is not for everyone, but I’m excited about it.
Leggings won't be accepted in a lot of historic churches or religious places so you'll need long (knee-length) shorts or skirts for those. Only a back-pack? Really? Another option is to have clothes that you box and ship from hotel to hotel. |
There are a million other things you can wear. Don’t walk around Europe in pajamas.
I’d find a few knit dresses
Are they cute leggings? Are you in shape? If so, it’s fine!
Find a wrap skirt that you can throw on top of the leggings for places where they’re not appropriate. Something like a pareo or pashmina type wrap would likely work as well and can be repurposed for a chilly evening, etc.
I would take a knit dress or two to wear or even wear over the leggings if it's cold. Dressier than jeans and dries faster and packs smaller. Jeans aren't very practical, and I think leggings are better, as long as you have some shirts to cover your butt.as well.
There are lots of wash and wear lightweight knit skirts/dresses you can buy that will roll down to nothing. Have at least one.
You didn’t mention what month? Leggings will be hot. Opt for looser linen pants in dark colors (khaki, black and navy). These will dry fairly quickly.
Buy a few lightweight skirts that you can wear over the leggings or on their own.
Yes I've done many backpacking trips and washable skirts, dresses, and large pashmina type scarves have served me well. The hardest thing, in my experience, is shoes because I do a lot of hiking and what works well for hiking looks a little out of place in a cathedral. But a long floor length skirt can hide boots, sandals, or sneakers. I got one amazing one with lots of elastic ruching around the waist that can be a long skirt or pull up to be a strapless dress. Throw on a shrug or scarf and it's great for a night out. |
OP here. Traveling from the end of May until Early July. So weather will likely range from chilly to hot with some rain.
