Washington Post's Home section did a story about the organizing and restocking videos on Tiktok at are so popular. I was watching a few just to get ideas about laundry room organizing and it seems like they all use scent beads/boosters and fabric softeners. I'm curious about how popular these are beyond these accounts that thrive on showing so much STUFF.
I only use liquid detergent, unscented dryer sheets, and the occasional scoop of OxyClean or bit of bleach. |

I use wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. I started adding sanitizer for certain items in the washer. Just bought scent booster, but plan on adding sachets to my closet rather than adding more chemicals directly onto my clothes.
They really push that stuff and I’m surprised that it’s pretty expensive for a container of scent booster. |
| That tracks. People who create these videos are all in on consumption, of course they’ll stock unnecessary product. No, I don’t use them. |

I use unscented tide, oxiclean free and unscented dryer sheets because I was raised in an upper class white household. This is a cultural thing and I try not be judgmental but I genuinely have a physical aversion to scented laundry and while I like to buy second hand, especially kid clothes, I spend a lot of time trying to soak the perfume out of them.
What works best is oxiclean first and then vinegar. Soak in a bucket overnight for both stages. |
| I think they’re just using them in those videos because they come in colors and make the weird sounds people like when you pour them into a glass canister or whatever. |

No, it's just extra waste and chemicals. All of those beads and softeners are terrible for the environment and probably bad for your health.
Just use dryer balls with essential oil if you want scent or look into the Dropps brand of scented pods. Dropps makes environmentally friendly laundry detergents. https://www.dropps.com/products/lavender-scent-booster-with-fabric-softener-pods |
You're reminding me of these leggings I got on Poshmark that smelled like detergent, even after I washed them. I actually smelled a few detergents in the laundry aisle to identify it...it was Gain. So strong. |
| nooo! I don't like the chemical-y smell of scent beads, fabric softener, etc. They're not good for you, either. I occasionally use wool dryer balls with essential oils, though. |
| I like their smell in their containers and at the store. I love walking down the laundry aisle! But in my own home, I use unscented and perfume free detergent without adding any extra scents. I don’t like the way it smells on my clothes following me around all day. |
| I don't like scent, so no. I use unscented laundry soap and wool dryer balls. |
| I use Bounce dryer sheets. If I don't, my clothes are all static-y and need ironing. I tried static balls once because they're better for the environment, but they didn't work. |
| Hate scented stuff. It literally makes me ill. I do love Dropps though (they also come in in scented). Dropps has made doing the laundry so much more pleasant. (Sorry if I sound like a commercial but I really like the product as well as the company and the better change for the environment by not buying big plastic containers of laundry stuff). |
| ^^^ unscented* |

Another "no" here.
But, I'm an American so I understand that much of our economy is based on the consumption of useless crap (and watching videos of people pushing useless crap) |

I put a small splash in when washing towels and sheets.
I never use fabric softener on clothes, though my DH does. |
