I have a Vitamix Food Cycler—same idea. I got it via Amazon for $315. It works very well. I run it ever other day or so with accumulated coffee grounds and filter plus fruit and vegetables trim and peels. It takes 5-6 hours to turn the contents into something that really does resemble dirt. You have to age the results before you use it for compost for plants. I have some in my compost bin and some just hanging out in a large pail in the back yard. It’s especially nice in winter when compost doesn’t really break down very much.

Looks like it processes in a 4 hour cycle.

Never really composted before. I thought cooked food couldn’t go in. But they make it seem like tons of different things can go in it.

This is a classic example of why we’ll never actually make any progress with energy efficiency and carbon emissions. Our lives just continue to become more energy intensive (and expensive).

Instead of placing food waste into an inexpensive outdoor bin that uses zero electricity to make compost, we now manufacture a plastic and metal appliance that requires electricity to do the same thing. And it’s being sold as something that’s “green!”

That thing holds a tiny amount of waste. I can’t imagine how many 4 hour cycles it would take to replace an average sized compost bin.

I’m not even one who is panicked about climate change, and this makes me think we’re doomed.

+1

I don’t live in DC so I had to look it up; it looks like you don’t have curbside composting yet but you can pay for private composting. Instead of spending $500 on something that uses energy (and probably needs something like filters), just put your compost in your freezer and take it to the curb once a week. My yard has way too many pests to do backyard composting, but we pay for curbside composting.

We live in Montgomery county and pay $30/month for curbside pickup and get a few free bags of compost a year.

Can I just use a food processor?

Yes, and I absolutely love it. It's my favorite purchase as of late.

It's easier than waiting for a service, or bringing all the stuff to a farmers market (ours isn't open yet anyway). It turns waste into compost in under 24 hours (there are different cycles you can select). My plants love it too.

It does take up a good amount of space on our counter, but the kids dig it too.
