This is a classic example of why we’ll never actually make any progress with energy efficiency and carbon emissions. Our lives just continue to become more energy intensive (and expensive). Instead of placing food waste into an inexpensive outdoor bin that uses zero electricity to make compost, we now manufacture a plastic and metal appliance that requires electricity to do the same thing. And it’s being sold as something that’s “green!” That thing holds a tiny amount of waste. I can’t imagine how many 4 hour cycles it would take to replace an average sized compost bin. I’m not even one who is panicked about climate change, and this makes me think we’re doomed.
+1 I don’t live in DC so I had to look it up; it looks like you don’t have curbside composting yet but you can pay for private composting. Instead of spending $500 on something that uses energy (and probably needs something like filters), just put your compost in your freezer and take it to the curb once a week. My yard has way too many pests to do backyard composting, but we pay for curbside composting.
